Motherboard: MSI H97 Gaming 3

CPU: i5-4460

RAM: GSkills Ripjaws 1600mhz 2x4gb

HDD:WD Blue 1tb

SSD: Crucial MX100 256gb

Video Card: Zotac GTX 970 4gb Dual Fan

PSU: Superflower HX600 600w 80+ Gold Semi Modular PSU

Case: Fractal Design Define R4

Got this suggestion off another forum but I'd like to get some opinions on it. First time venturing into building a desktop so I'm pretty excited.

Note: I'm over here in Singapore, so we have price lists instead of the awesome PC parts site that you guys have. Getting most of my parts via brick and mortar stores :(

Very good choice with the PSU.

I would get a i5-4970 instead. AFAIK the i5-4460 is a bit underpowered for that build. Everything else seems good.

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

Everything seems good, except your MoBo (at least here in the US) is too expensive for what it is. You can make do with a cheaper h97 board. Don't fall for gimmicks like the word "gaming."

As for as the other people saying the i5-4460 is bad, it's not. It's the best option by far for people who don't overclock. The 4690 (non-k) which is what I think @Jerakl was referring to is considerably more expensive for very little performance gain, and the Zotac 970 is a well known brand. Yes it's on the cheaper side of things, but it's still a 970 and will still peform very well, and is actually ideal from a price to performance standpoint. You can spend way more on the GPU, but you'll only get like a 5-10% improvement on it tops.

Basically, except for your MoBo, those are great choices. Except I have no idea about the PSU. It's not a company I've heard of. You can easily make do with an EVGA 500B unit or even a corsair CX500. There's no need to buy a PSU with high efficiency as you don't run a 24/7 server farm.

The 4460 isn't bad, but he didn't give a budget, Which means I don't know how much more he is willing to spend on a build.

The Zotac 970 is a solid choice.

Superflower is one of the best PSU manufacturers. Like, THE BEST. Better then that one other company I can't remember the name of.

Wow, you guys are fast! Thanks for taking time to help me take a look. I kind of grabbed the build off what was suggested for someone with a similar budget to mine. The 4690 is within my budget however, with around USD$20~ premium over the 4460 at my end. The gaming h97 seems to be around the same price at our end so it isn't much more expensive (all these variations makes my head spin) . How is the z97 over the h97? That does carry a bit of a premium as well.

I clearly don't know my motherboards and CPUs well, however. The ascend takes some work..

Motherboards are all about the featureset. You generally get the cheapest motherboard that has all the features you're going to use. In your case, that's the cheapest H97 board that isn't by ECS or Biostar (they're not great manufacturers). In the US you can get one for $70, whereas the board in your build is around $120, which is why I brought it up. Motherboards don't have performance specs, so the extra cost goes to waste if you don't take advantage of its larger featureset, which you aren't.

Thank you, I've learnt something about choosing motherboards today! I suppose I could shave some bucks and get myself a MSI H97 PC MATE instead? The "gaming" label does carry a premium.

i would suggest to get little cheaper case ,450-500wpsu, 970 windforce and 4690k with any cheap z97 mobo

Thanks for taking time to look at this! What case would you suggest? (Tbh I just thought the R4 looked sexy :P)

A 4960k.. Hmmm.. I'm not venturing into OC yet, however! But I'm looking into the 4960, which is still within budget.

case is really a personal choice,  ,depending on budget nzxt s340 or nzxt 210 source would be my choice

oerclocking is not a rocket science, nowadays u can overclock with a press of button,msi-oc ginie or asus have good autooverclock software

oc does increase performance

if u r still uncomfortable ,get i5-4460 or i5 4430 with cheapest h81 board, no need to put that much money in h97 board, though if u get i5 4460 u will need bios update
