Stupid question time.

What reasons might I not be aware of to stick with an i5 4690k instead of an i7 4771?    The i5 currently isn't over-clocked.  I bought it thinking one day I might overclock it, but I have no steadfast plans to do so.

The i5 is newer and has a different code name than the i7.  Does the age make much of a difference or is the i7 still going to be faster than the i5's base speed?

The i7 is basically available as a freebee.  So "is it worth it" in terms of price isn't a consideration... more the to-do of actually installing it.

I think you mean an i7 4770 not a 4771.

The i7 has hyperthreading compared to the i5 which does not.

In gaming the i7 4770 will not have much of an increase in performance over the i5 4690K, but in things such as video editing/rendering it will strongly pull ahead.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

Actually he probably does mean 4771... http://ark.intel.com/products/77656/Intel-Core-i7-4771-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz

Anyway. If all your using the system for is gaming then the I7 wont provide much if any increase realistically speaking. If your doing some light photo/video editing then it may be a worthwhile upgrade

if the i5 can do 4.8ghz 24/7 then i will be faster at everything. if its under that it will be a tiny bit slow mutli thread, but a lot faster single thread.

Yeah just stick with what you got if it's a gaming machine, Literally the only games the provide any difference between my old i5 and my new i7 is battlefield 4 (certain maps) and crysis 3.

i was questioning it myself so i went to look it up. Kinda wondering why it exists since it looks to be identical to the 4770(k)

It came out of a late-model iMac.   Late-2013 I think.

Seems like it wouldn't be worth the time or thermal paste to swap out the i5.   :)

Maybe I'll just hold onto it any way in case another need ever comes up.

Thanks, every one, for your quick replies.

That's actually a pretty good idea since it has integrated graphics.    And I have an old spare case..  and an 8GB DIMM... and a 300 watt power supply from an HP pre-fab... and plenty of drives.

Hmmmmmm.....
