Hey linus community I am building a new pc and wanting to run games at 4k on ultra settings. I know that is a bit of an ask. I was thinking a dual 980's or an r9 295x2. That's what I thought but what do you guys think. I don't realy want to go over $900 on the gpu.

Thanks

Triple GTX 970s or R9 290Xes will do nicely and have you a little over $900. Dual cards is a better idea though, due to scaling.

Crossfire R9 290s are hands down the best price/performance solution. They own a single 980 for significantly cheaper. Hell, you might as well throw a third one in there if you have the budget and want to turn on all the bells and whistles in games. If you care a lot for noise and power draw however 2 970s in sli are the next best choice.

However, if you can wait for the R9 300 series I'd advise you do. You might regret buying something new just a couple of months earlier if it's significantly better than whatever's out now.

At $679, the R9 295x2 is a hard beast to beat. Especially since it comes with free games...though how much of a value that is depends on you.

The 980's give the best overall experience, however at a much higher price.

Might be worth waiting for the 300 series before deciding.

At the moment. 980s are the best performing, but the R9 295x2 is a fair bit cheaper.

The R9 295x2 is pretty close and also substantially cheaper.

The R9 295x2 isn't that far behind, and consumes less power iirc.

I wouldn't advise waiting for a product that hasn't even been mentioned by its manufacturer.

Mentioned or not, I don't think there's any doubt that amd will release some new cards ;) waiting is never a bad choice if you can afford to (and are willing to). The 295x2 has the problem of being pretty expensive in comparison with 3 R9 290s. With the prices I've seen you'd actually spare about 50 bucks by going for the 290s and you'd get more performance (if not by much). Power consumption is the real kicker, but honestly if you can power a 295x2 chances are 3 290s aren't a problem either. That's up to the op though.

-edit-

never mind that, for 680 bucks the 295 is the best option

I'm using 2 780ti's to get 60fps with vsync on high settings on most modern games and ultra on older games in 4k. Screen tearing at 40-59fps look terrible and choppy. I bought the 780ti's for $800 each when the classified editions from evga became available. For about the same price now, you could get 2 r9 295x2's for quadfire and maintain 60 fps minimum. That's what I would do. You could get one now and add another one later as games get more demanding.

r9 295x2. It's running as low as 649 in the US from what I saw on PCpartpicker. It beats every other dual card set up at 4k except dual 980s which beats it by a small margin. The 980s will run you an extra 500 dollars and will run a lot hotter unless they are liquid cooled, for minimal gain in performance, while the 295x2 comes with a warrantied liquid cooler out of the box that will keep it way cooler than any air cooled dual card setup AND vent all the heat out of your case(and if you live where its effin freezing 2/3 the year like me itll help heat your pad lol).
