212 isn't pointless if you're not OCing. And it's pretty much the best $30 or less cooler. Sure you can find stock cooler type for less, but they won't really change anything.

TBH 212 EVO is pretty much the best good-quality cooler you are going to get for cheap.

My Current Build:

Intel i5 3570K @ 4.4GHz 1.11V, Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, Asrock Z77 Extreme4, Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600MHz, Samsung 840 EVO 250GB, Asus GTX 760 DCII Overclocked, Corsair CX600M

if he isnt overclocking then there are a few options which are better for him at a cheaper price.

Ya, but anything much cheaper (Such as an ARTIC Alpine 11) won't be much quieter since it is the same form factor as the stock cooler with a tiny fan. The bigger the fan and heatsink, the slower the fan can run which will result in a quieter system :)

I was looking at the ARCTIC Alphine as well. Idk its good though.

ive not used that cooler before so i cant comment on it, the hyper 212 is a waste of money, its too expensive if your arent overclocking.

Also consider the type of cooler it is, firstly the bearing used in the fan, that makes the most noise, the hyper 212 is louder then it needs to be as a result. Afterthat consider who the cooler is aimed at, eg the zalman 5x which i linked inside for the performance guys, yes it has a smaller fan and a higher rpm but the bearing style cancels that effect out.

But here is the most important part, screw the coolermaster mounting system, main reason as to why i hate the 212, its mounting system is horrid.

Now thinking about it i forgot about raijintek which are better then both zalman and coolermaster by miles. Why did i forget about them.

My bad, i forgot about raijintek. they arent big in the us yet, mainly europe and asia at the moment but their coolers are amazing, cheap and quite but really great

Well ultimately it is up to the OP but personally I have a Hyper 212 EVO and I love it. It is very cheap ($29.99 at NCIX right now) and stays dead quiet and keeps me overclocked 3570K very cool even at load.

the hyper 212 was a great cooler, when you have some spare time look up the raijintek themis and ereboss, the hyper 212 is in trouble, its a bigger problem for cm in europe and asia but for the us guys the 212 is cheaper.

The Raikintek's look good but after I retire my 212 EVO I hope to get a higher end cooler such as a Noctua D-14/15 to get a totally silent system :)
