Building a high tier rig for a friend, want opinions!

jonyman23
So I am going to be building a rig for a friend and I am picking out his parts. He has a nice 2k budget, which is loose. He only games on it and surfs the web but he won't have to ever worry about games not maxing out for a good few years.

So this is a sorta dream build for me, it's a high tier rig and something I've wanted to tackle. Here is the list...

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($249.99 @ Micro Center)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  ($89.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI Z97-GAMING 7 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($169.99 @ NCIX US)
Storage: Intel 530 Series 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($109.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 980 4GB Twin Frozr Video Card  ($579.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Case: NZXT Phantom 530 (Red) ATX Full Tower Case  ($119.99 @ Newegg)
Monitor: Asus PB278Q 27.0" Monitor  ($469.00 @ B&H)
Total: $2166.40
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

  •  He doesn't know how to OC but he may learn or I'll do it for him so it's worth it in the long run

  •  I'd like a case that is easy to install an h100i in because it's my first time and I want to not have a disadvantage, so point me in the direction of a great case! As you can tell the general color scheme is red/black.

  • 16GB ram is obviously OD but I'm going for as future proof as possible, this way he won't even have to think about more for years.

  • I think this is a nice 750w PSU, I have a rosewill tachyon 750w and I like the 80+ platinum it has over the cooler master but I am sure it is still kick ass.

  •  I REALLY love this monitor, I have been wanting it for a pretty long time and plan on getting it myself eventually. I think the 980 will absolutely dominate 1440p games on ultra and it will for a while. I really hope the G-sync one comes to a lower price

  • I am going to get the intel 4790k and msi gaming 7 at microcenter with their $40 off bundle if I can

Okay so please give any suggestions or input, I'd really love it

Swap the cpu cooler for a h105, its slightly newer and has some issues of the h100i fixed.

Other than that it looks good.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

I like your build a lot. A few considerations- I like the ASRock extreme 6 mobo a lot more than that MSI board. The ASRock gives you better connectivity with 2 M.2 slots, one is ultra M.2 for total futureproofing storage wise.

The PSU I would prefer you get is the EVGA Supernova G2. It got spectacular reviews at JonnyGuru.

There is Team XTreem 2666Mhz Cas 11 RAM on the market for $150 @ 2x8GB (16GB) I think thats an awesome deal and Team is a trusted brand and you should jump on that RAM.

The H100i has mounting issues and leaks have been reported I'd feel better if you got the H105 which has a thicker rad for better heat dissipation anyways. Very similar looking part.

Enjoy the build it will be epic!

Intel Inside. Overweight guy in his 30's outside.

this is honestly turning out just like my build but I have a 4670k and am getting a gigabyte 970 G1 for christmas(have a windforce 770 now). I love gigabytes windforce cooler the best but I went with the MSI's because they matched the color scheme with everything. I really think this build will kick all ass

You're build is pretty damn good mate. The ONLY thing I see that needs changing IS the case. Plastics not the new metal  :P, so you'll wanna go for a mostly metal case, such as the NZXT H440. You could go for the black/red version to better match the red & black theme that you're going for.  ;)

Get a enthoo pro instead. :)

Also, get a gtx 970, almost as good as a gtx 980, but way cheaper.

Get a evga g2 750w as the power supply.

Get a high end air cooler, your friend probably won't know how to deal with any possible issues with liquid cooling. Mabye a nh-d15.

But overall looks good! :)

Switch the ram to 16GB kit, don't get single 8GB sticks.

Here is what I came up with, I choose a decent HSF so he can get higher end parts. The HSF can always be upgraded.  If you don't need the OS, then that save about $100, which can be put towards a better hsf like the Corsair H105. Cheapest 2560x1400 screen is call Wasabi Mango

Do not buy two 8GB memory sticks separately. Buy a dual channel kit, i.e. 2x8GB. XMP profiles are based on the memory kit capacity. If you buy separate kits you may have to fiddle with memory settings to get them performing at the rated speed in dual channel. On higher speed parts you may not be able to achieve the advertised speed and timings.

The Kraken X61 and Swiftech H220-X while more expensive, look very good and do an excellent job cooling.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Damn you're right about the RAM might having some issues, I got it because it had a combo discount, their the exact same card so I really didn't think anything of it.
