Im looking at:

4k: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-28-Inch-Definition-Monitor-U28D590D/dp/B00IEZGWI2/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1416282338&sr=8-9&keywords=1440p+monitor

or

1440p:http://www.amazon.com/PB278Q-27-Inch-LED-lit-Professional-Graphics/dp/B009C3M7H0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1416365992&sr=8-2&keywords=asus+pb

I'd go for the 1440p as it will be easier to run and I'm fairly sure 4K is still a bit... buggy?

(Though right now I'd be greatful for even 1080p... I dislike my current 1680x1050 monitor, 16:10 isn't fun for content creation as you have to stretch/shrink parts of your video to fit a youtube video box correctly... (has to be 16:9 for it to look right))

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

Well, the Samsung one isn't IPS, so... There's that...

I think 1440p is a better way to go. You need an absurd amount of graphics horsepower to take advantage of 4K in games, and on a 28" monitor everything is way too tiny to take advantage of it on the desktop. Of course you can use Windows scaling, but it doesn't work perfectly.

Depends on your preference really.

Are you all about the response times and fps?

Are you all about the best looking visual experience?

Or are you in between?

4k, also IPS isn't a very smooth gaming experience. Well 4K TN isn't that smooth either. I'd get the higher resolution.

You lost me at "dorm". Expensive tech + college dorm = :(

Trust me.  It's more for the reasons you can't think of, than the reasons you can.

you're asking ''easily just as buitiful and i can go surround without too much hassle later...or hardly better except after 32 inches, and is instantly 4x the workload for my gpu....''

personally i'd go 1440.
