I want to buy a new high resolution monitor, and I originally had my heart set on the Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q (1440p / 144Hz). I've never gamed at more than 60Hz, and I'm really curious about the high refresh rate experience. I'm also really interested in G-Sync. However, the SWIFT seems to have a few issues that make me hesitate to purchase right now.

If I didn't need high refresh rates or G-Sync, I would jump on the Asus PB287Q (4K / 60Hz) monitor in the blink of an eye. I'm just not sure how those extra features will improve the gameplay experience.

For anybody that has upgraded from 60Hz to 120/144Hz, I want to know - how does it impact gaming? To me, a highly immersive experience is more important than gaining a competitive edge in multiplayer games, although I do play multiplayer games almost exclusively these days. Does the smoother animation of high refresh rates increase immersion? Do you think it's worth trying to get ahold of a SWIFT as opposed to settling for the PB287Q?

Any users of G-Sync are also welcome to chime in!

If you are playing fast paced competitive shooters like Counter Strike, then a 144hz monitor is sweet. It helps a lot when you need quick reactions.

For practically every other game type, 60hz will do fine.

But at the end of the day, if you have the cash to burn, go ahead and get a decent 144hz monitor.

Does it give you a competitive edge in shooters?

no

Does it increase immersion in role-playing or adventure games?

yes if you don't have to turn down your graphics for the sake of getting perfectly smooth frame rate

Do you think it's worth trying to get ahold of a SWIFT as opposed to settling for the PB287Q?

no, i might be a little bit biased though since i have a PB287Q and i havent used a swift

The higher refresh rate is totally worth it, specially since either way you're getting a TN monitor... and the ROG Swift is known for having one of the best TN panels on the market and competes with some average-lowerend IPS panels so the ONLY thing you'd lose is the extra pixels, and yes plenty of people notice the extra 84 hz and Gsync is a nice feature to have(not that I use it personally due to not having an Nvidia card or monitor with it) but I've only seen it at shows

The usual monitors with 144Hz rates  tend to use inferior TN panels. This is fine if you could care less about color accuracy or don't mind shifting in colors. It depends on user. Personally, I'd take a 60Hz *IPS or solid VA based monitor well before I'd take 144Hz of TN, but that might be because I don't care for shooters much and do graphic work.
