Hey everyone! So I have something that I would like to get your opinion on. For the last couple of weeks, I've really been entertaining the idea of building my own PC. I've picked out the parts and everything, all I have to do is order it and put the damn thing together. But the thing is that I'm not a big gamer. I love to game on consoles, specifically playstation, but I'm not a bg PC gamer. There are a few games that intrigue me but for the most part, most of the gaming that I will be doing is going to be on the playstation. So I guess my questions is this: Is building a PC worth it??? Part of me says that it is a waste of money for what I will be using it for which is light gaming, movies, wordprocessing (and hopefully programming for school). But another part of me says that it is worth it because it's a good learning experience, I'll probably have that computer for a very long time, and it's fun. I guess I'm just kind of confused. haha I know, first world problems. But if you guys could give me your opinons I would really appreciate it.

Yes!

I was questioning it at first, but I am SO happy I made my decision. It is a lot of fun to build it and a great experience. You can build something that you think will suit what you'll be doing. I've seen people build console killers for $400! (But you get a full computer too :))

Well what do you mean you're not a PC gamer?

A console is essentially a PC with hardware limitations. If you have the money and you aren't wasting it, build a PC.

If you plan and pick parts well, you'll get more longevity as well.

its not too hard to stream to a seperate room, setup console controllers, or even move the pc to the living room, im sure the 70% chacne you have it all in your room makes all these points.. well.. pointless but still..

for 200$ more you'll get an experience a million times better.

also starbound isnt on playstation.

starbound is love starbound is life BUILD THAT DAMN PC AND GET STARBOUND YO.

yes, you should.

xD

other than you have less money in the end but save it later on games making a pc to play console games and more at a better preformance has no cons.

most console games are either improved and put on pc later, or ported with, still, better experience.

setting them up with a controller if you dislike keyboard+mouse isnt hard.

Yeah the build that I have right now is about 800 dollars.....ahhhh I can definitely afford it, but I'm not really sure how much gaming I'm going to be doing......ughhhh I'm so confused hahaha

Here's what i would do:

Get a haswell i3 (1150 socket)

A GeForce GTX 750 TI

A motherboardd (Gigabyte, Asus, MSI or ASROCK)

A good looking case

A 500W PSU (corsair or Cooler master) so that you can get new graphics card if you find out that you like PC gaming.

And a 1 TB HDD

This should be doable for 500-600$

What do you play on PS3/4?

I play Uncharted, Batman, Mass Effect, Shadow of Mordor (when I get a PS4) Gran Turismo 5 and some other stuff.  But what I really like about consoles is that they are guaranteed to work for the games that they have. Like I don't have to worry about not having a fast enough processor or anything like that, it just works.

well........ if you're spending over 500 bucks on a pc it will ''just work'' and work well for about another year and a half ATLEAST and along time after that. and upgrades are cheaper then the new console and its also your computer, not just games.

I'd say it's worth it, if you don't have a computer already. Even if you have a laptop, it's still worth it to a degree.

You get a bigger screen, it's upgradable, and if you have school work and such to do, great for that.

$800 can be a lot to some people, so if it is, and if you already have something that's capable of doing your school work, I'd probably advise against it.

I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I actually enjoy gaming on consoles. There are a few games I'll only play on PC though; anything strategy based, for instance.

So, I have a PC, a console, and a laptop. Best of all worlds.

$400 can't really buy a console killer. That's an illusion.

You have to buy the os ($100), monitor ($200), keyboard ($60 for a decent one), mouse ($50)....boom, we're already over $400 and haven't even started with the tower.

Granted, it's different if one doesn't already own a TV, but I'd say that's pretty rare.

IMO all those gaming peripherals are overrated except for a monitor.

Especially on a budget.

Well only two peripherals were actually listed there. The mouse and keyboard. $60 doesn't really buy you much of a keyboard either, to be honest, and I've never spent less than $50 on a mouse.

You're still looking at at least $400 on top of the cost of the tower.

Personally, if I were you, I'd go with a computer like this one here.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($179.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H97N-WIFI Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($94.99 @ Newegg)

Memory: Team Zeus Red 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($64.99 @ Newegg)

Storage: Kingston Fury 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($59.99 @ NCIX US)

Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($51.99 @ Directron)

Case: EVGA Hadron Mini ITX Tower Case w/500W Power Supply  ($101.98 @ Newegg)

Total: $802.93

If you're gaming at 1080p, this should be more than enough to satisfy your itch. Plus the tower is nice and small.

You can of course shave off some money by going with a cheaper case and power supply.

Intel, I find, is generally a little better if you want a set and forget system with great speed.

Personally I'd get a 256gb SSD and ditch the HDD.
