Which Power Supply?

Go to solution Solved by quan289,

Thanks everyone. Seems Seasonic is very well regarded, even if their website isn't really informative.

Thanks for the suggestion SeanBond but I'm not really looking to get it shipped from the US due to the shipping time and any potential warranty issues. The ones I listed in the first post are all available from Mwave (mwave.com.au) which is only a 15 minute drive from my house. Appreciate it though!

Going by WoodenMarker's comments, I might even try to save a little more and get a 550W, which makes it about $120 AUD.

Seasonic G Series 550W or Corsair CS550M 550W?

Both are modular/semi modular which are both good enough for me as I just don't want unused cables inside my case. Supplied cables will do everything I need them to...

Both are about the same price as well!

Leaning towards Seasonic at the moment...

EDIT:

I've never heard of that brand before...but it's even cheaper than the Seasonic G 550W and Corsair CS550M. It's 80+ Gold and modular as well...might need to add that to the list!

The Corsair CS 550M is ok. The build quality of it is inferior to both the Super Flower Golden Green and Seasonic G. Since both of them are $120 AUD, I would go with the Seasonic G. I'm going to assume that the shipping cost of the SF GG 600w I had mentioned will bring it around the same price as the Seasonic G, as such, I would just recommend going for the Seasonic (easier to deal with returns if anything comes up).

The XTR 650w may still be an option and is indeed better than the Seasonic G, if you want something quiet and fully modular. The 100 extra watts can be consider to be an added value, but like already stated, it's overkill.

The B2 or G2?

Not sure of the difference between Bronze and Gold to be honest, I just wanted something that was definitely going to be very reliable for a good while.

EVGA Supernova 750w G2 is an excellent high-end PSU. While it is better than everything mentioned so far, it's $145 AUD, and you aren't going to SLI.

As for the B2, it's essentially a cost down version of the Super Flower Golden Green unit (like the Rosewill Capstone that had been mentioned). It's a good PSU, if you get a good deal on it, but as already noted, it's overkill if you aren't going to SLI.

Bronze vs Gold is about efficiency. Basically, how much energy is being wasted as heat during the AC-DC conversion of the power supply. It might have an affect on your electricity bill (usually very small depending on how much electricity cost) as well as how hot the PSU can get. It however doesn't necessary correlate to better internal components.

I'm looking for a 80+ Gold PSU with modular that will support the following:

i5-4690K (Planning to overclock)

Kraken X61

Grid+ Fan Controller with 4 x 120mm fans

GTX 970 (No plans for SLI)

8GB DDR3 1600 (Planning to get 16GB)

Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD

Seagate 3TB HDD

Leadtek PCI TV Tuner

NZXT LED lighting kit 200cm

I'm not sure what wattage I need but I'd like a little bit extra for the overclocking etc.

I have a budget of $150 AUD and I'm currently looking at the following:

- XFX XTR Series 650W

- Seasonic G Series 650W

- Corsair CS750M 750W

All of the above are 80+ Gold and are modular, but I'm not sure whether I need 650W or 750W. If 650 is enough, is XFX or Seasonic better?

Any other suggestions welcome!

The best of the three isn't the Seasonic G but rather the XFX XTR 650w. The XTR is based on the SAME platform as the Seasonic G; however, it offer a quieter FDB fan, a switch for semi-passive mode (allow the fan not to spin up at lower loads), and it's a fully modular power supply (the Seasonic G is semi-modular).

Another option that you can consider that is comparable to the Seasonic G is the Super Flower Golden Green 600w: http://www.itestate.com.au/pages/product/pdt_product_detail.faces?BeanName=productDetailAction&pcode=16156

What about the rosewill capstone? It's super cheap and you yourself said it was the best for the price. Just because his budget is 150 does not mean he has to spend that much. From everything I see I don't see a reason for buying anything else right now considering the 750w is 60 on newegg after rebate USD of course

While it is indeed a good PSU, he's from Australia, so it's not available to them. He is better off getting the Super Flower Golden Green unit for $108 AUD (same price as the Seasonic G 450w), as the Capstone is based on that unit internally.

Pricing is good

Considering Rosewill is the in-house brand of Newegg, I wouldn't expect it to be cheap/available outside of the US/maybe Canada.

Can't beat SeaSonic, although you could consider saving a fair bit and getting a 750w EVGA Supernova.

That's just my opinion though. It's your money being spent.

The S12G is better than the CSM.

The H440 has a psu shroud--doubt you'd see the leds.

I was going to have the fan facing the bottom of the case because of the shroud, I'm just not sure if the blue underglow would look nice

If I'm missing something in that I can have it pointing up just let me know, it's my first build in years, previous build just had a top mounted PSU so yeah...

Bronze vs Gold... Well, they're measures of the efficiency of the CPU - under some percent load must be able to achieve an 80 percent efficiency to achieve such a rating. Hope this works it out for ya.

"

  1. To qualify for 80 Plus, a power supply must achieve at least 80% efficiency at three specified loads (20%, 50% and 100% of maximum rated power). However, 80 Plus supplies may still be less than 80% efficient at lower loads. "

Should point out that higher efficiency generally means higher quality components inside.

Most likely going to Seasonic now, but will still consider the XFX, it's doesn't cost much more than the Seasonic and would be useful in the extremely unlikely event that I go SLI.
