Hi guys,

i'm planning to build a gaming PC with the following components:

ASUS maximus VII hero Motherboard

intel i7 4790k

(2x) ASUS strix gtx 970 DCUII SLI

OCZ vertex 450 128gb (2 SSD on raid 0)

1TB WD blue HDD

Corsair RM850 power suply

Corsair ballistix ellite 16gb 2x8 CL9 1866 MHZ

is it a competitive computer today and to the future?

or

is there a better way to built a machine from this grade to the years to come?

feel free to leave your opinions guys :)

cheers

Get a evga 750w g2. 850w is overkill for two 970s. The RM series is nowhere near as good as evga's psu's. Other than that, looks good! :)

Do you mean "crucial" ballistix?

SSD's in raid 0 is kind of pointless in my opinion. You would be better off getting a 256gb.

Get a Corsair H105 added to the build, Don't get an RM power supply and you have no computer case - everything else is okay ;)

NCASE M1 i5-12600kf  RTX 4060Ti FE Z690M-ITX  SF600 NH-L9x65 Chromax  LPX 32GB

I suggest you don't RAID SSD's as more storage will be more useful in the long run.

Get a different SSD, specifically one from Samsung or Intel for all of the speed you could ever want.

Corsair's RM series is less than great. I suggest you get some high end Corsair AX series or pretty much any SeaSonic PSU.

You can absolutely do better on RAM, lower latency + higher speed = faster. Corsair Vengeance Pro is the best combo of both.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

As far as gaming goes, you don't need faster or more responsive RAM, as the differences in performance are negligible at best. Linus has a video on this. Unless you're running an APU (NOT RECOMMENDED FOR HIGH END GAMING) faster RAM makes maybe 1-2fps difference, and when you start getting into the 2133 and 2400 MHz ranges, you CAS latency is so high that it actually cancels out that higher clock speed and your framerates go back down.

But yes, for gaming, all you need is 8GB.

Yeah, that's why higher speed RAM is actually a waste of money a lot of the time. There are some good ones though from G. Skill that have high speed and low latency though.

And faster RAM can be more useful in things like video editing I would assume (I haz no proof).

That's certainly one way the faster memory can help, but I thought this was primarily a gaming rig.

Don't waste money on an ROG board. Get an MSI Z97 G45 Gaming

Get an EVGA 750G2 which is Super Flower quality rather then CWT poop

Instead of Strix, get two Gigabyte G1 970s with the money you save

thanks for the quick response, this is truly a good place to get information.

sumary,

8gb of ram is enough with the lowest latency possible in the 1600 mhz range.

the RM power suply gotta fly xD

water cooling needed (i guess.. for overcloking)

and final question,

motherboards.... could you give me some good references?

once again, thank you

cheers

You won't notice that much of a difference between the highest and lowest latency 1600MHz DDR3 RAM in gaming.

For the power supply if you want something good then I'm definitely happy to give you a hand to look for one if you provide me with a location and budget

Personally I'd get a Cryorig R1 Ultimate over a water cooler, it performs similarly but you have less of a risk of things going bad like pump dying or leaks

And for the motherboard, grab an MSI Z97 G45 Gaming. Good price, looks great, performs well.

If you could provide us with a budget and location for the whole thing we could also come up with as best of a build we can for the money.

Well, either way, most of it still applies. RAM latency isn't a huge deal in gaming, and the MSI board would save you some money over an ROG board.

For a power supply, check out some stuff made by Antec, Super Flower, or Seasonic.

@Aniallation    shortly, i7 4790k, SLI gigabyte G1 gtx 970, MSI g45 gaming motherboard, samsung 840 evo SSD, seasonic gold 760, 8gb ram, 1 HDD, Cryorig R1 plus the case . will this PC run 4k games? or future games easily?

Honestly not much is "futureproof" for 4K gaming as it's really unknown what future GPU technology will hold in the next few years, as well as how demanding games will be in 4K. You will likely have to start turning settings down eventually, but it is a very good system for gaming for now and at least the next while.
