Hey guys, so with Christmas coming up, I'm looking for a dedicated microphone to purchase. Although I have narrowed it down to a few options (AT2020, AKG Perpection, Blue Yeti), I would like to know your preference/opinions on these microphones?

Will I need a dedicated soundboard/DAC or anything like that? This is my current PC Setup:

i5-4690k @ 3.50GHz

8GB DDR3 1866 Corsair Vengeance

Nvidia GeForce GTX 970

Samsung 840 Evo

120GB SSD

Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB

Asus Z97-C

Corsair H100i CPU Cooler

NZXT H440

Thanks for the help!

Sir Doge

If this is just for skype and things like that, I say save a bit and go for a snowball over a yeti. You won't notice any quality difference. Also if you're using a usb microphone, you don't need an interface.

Feel free to message me if you want to chat!

Would it be better to get the AT2020 usb, since its only 20pounds more expensive than the snowball? Or is it just the same? (I don't really like the snowball look and visual)

Fair enough. It is pretty weird looking. For skype and stuff, there's no noticeable difference between the two. If you took them both into a recording studio for some reason (I have just to see which sounds better), you should find there's a bit more detail and a sort of 'focus' to the AT2020, but it's very slight. It's your choice whether 20 pounds is worth it for looks (and build. Metal vs plastic)

Hmm, thanks for the information and the opinion, friend. I guess i'll have to wait and see how christmas time rolls out. However if its USB there is no need for a external dac/soundboard, but if its not USB, I need one? Is that correct?

lots of positive reviews, trustworthy and used by lots of youtubers

Fair enough. I do think it's more money than Mr. Doge needs to spend though

You're most welcome Mr. Doge. I haven't come across any non-usb microphones that aren't XLR. The ones on headsets typically use a three pole 3.5mm jack that can plug into front panel audio or motherboard audio connectors that most people are familiar with. XLR is a very bulky connection frequently used on studio audio equipment and most microphones. You would need an audio interface to use an XLR microphone. For example, in my setup, I have a focusrite saffire 2i4 (my interface) and two microphones (AT2020 XLR version and a Shure SM57) connected to it.

I hope this helps

Yeti or even Snowball.

You do need them on a stand probably, because if they are just standing on your desk you will all the noise your keyboard makes

(Not the clicking, but the boomy sound on your desk)
