That's a tuff call, Sound or more PCI-E slots and more sata ports. Depending on what he likes. I would recomend the ASUS Maximus V EXTREME more PCI-E slots and more sata ports but I love shoving SSD's and HDD's in my case as much as I can. I don't know if your friend feels the same way, if not go with the ASUS Maximus V FORMULA/THUNDERFX. Just a quistion, if he decides on the ASUS Maximus V EXTREME why not think about the GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UP7, That board is a beast of a board for $20 bucks more it has alot more features on it. Just asking I'm not trying to convince your friend that is the way to go.

What does he think he will get out of spending more for a board that a cheaper board can do as well?

An Asus P8Z77 board will suit him just fine. IMO the RoG boards are overpriced given the feature set. They're like most Apple products: you're buying the RoG name.

LOL that is very true. I didn't really look at it that way but yeah it would suck to feel like you are trek or treating every day of the year :)

There is one benefit to buying the Rog boards and that is the PLX chip if he ever wants to do 3 way SLI/Crossfire or 4 way SLI/Crossfire

And the chances of that are?

I am yet to meet someone who actually permanently runs a 3 or 4 way SLI/Crossfire setup

True, nether have I but at least it's there if he ever wants to go balls to the wall with his pc I guess :). He might just like the way the boards look to. I know I have spent a little extra cash on some boards I own just because they go good with the color scheme I want to go with.

That's what Im looking forward to as well. I really hope MSI sticks with the Lighting theme for the 700 series cards and 8000 series cards. I so want a matching card to go with my board :)
