does the 290x compare to the 980?

GTX 980 smashes the R9 290x but is also significantly more expensive. A GTX 970 with an OC like mine often beats out the R9 290x by a few frames

So from my personal testing I will give you an idea of the performance difference.

In Heaven 4.0 DX11 1080p everything maxed, the Asus Strix GTX 970 scores 53.8 avg fps.

The Asus DC2 290x in the same benchmark scores 55.9 avg fps.

The Asus Reference GTX 980 in the same benchmark scores 63.8 avg fps.

Obviously there are price differences and other things to consider, but if you want an idea of the performance difference, then there you go :)

Best bang for buck is sli 970s if you don't mind sli...

980 is about 20% faster but at least 50% more expensive than a 970.

Valley / heaven benchmarks don't do too well on 970/980s from what I have seen. I would expect more. Look up some other reviews, ones on the 970 should compare it to a 290 and 290x. Be warned that most reviews of the 970 will compare it overclocked to a stock clocked 980/290/290x so check that its apples to apples.

yes it is still very high end, the only card that actually out performs it by a decent margin is the gtx 980.  the gtx 970 is very similar in performance, but has considerably lower power consumption.
