Headphones + DAC/AMP for mixed genre of music.

BubbleTrouble
Go to solution Solved by ShearMe,

So.....

I did like V2s. I have Z97P-D3 motherboard so without any amp.

I'd like to hear that nice sound of guitar and drums, so I guess DT 990 would be the way to go? Then I would really need a DAC/AMP, what do you people think of Fiio E10K?

....yeah.

990's should satisfy. If the E10K is in budget it should do the job.

okay so clearly you don't understand english grammer, maybe it's not your primary language but thats okay, i'm not going to respond to this anymore. Op can buy a modi and plug it into his pc which has an internal amp (which will not be bypassed via usb) and this will be enough to power m50's as loud as he wants and it will sound fine. He can buy a better amp later if his budget supports it and keep the fantastic dac OR he can buy senheiser momentums or some akg 550's which will not need to be amped to sound fine and are a much better option than the m50s and the dac. If you're going to argue that you can't use an external dac without an external amp then you're not very smart. I use the internal amp from my pc with an external dac and it's more then audible through my iems. (fiio d3 to shure se215 if you're curious)

So many errors in so many levels....

1. 'PC's internal amp', which is a part of the onboard audio's circuitry, gets bypassed altogether when there's a USB audio device plugged and selected. You can go to BIOS and turn off the onboard audio, including the amp, and the external dac will continue working, because it's a whole different standalone device.

2. IEMs are far more efficient than headphones. SE215 is 20 ohms and 107dB/mW. Plus the fact that it's inserted into ear canals, meaning it's much closer to eardrums, means IEMs don't need to go very loud to get the same perceived volume as headphones. DACs got pre-amp circuits to raise the signal to line level (do us a favor and read about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_level even if just a speed read), that's why you still got sound with high sensitivity devices like IEMs. Headphones will also produce sounds when plugged directly to the line out, but the signal strength won't be enough to drive it properly.

3. Good going on dissing Fiio products, but using one yourself

Sidenote: personally wouldent bother with fiio. They make good dacs, but from what i have read they are considered basically "at least I have a dac" products and have been replaced by newer alternatives (look up schitt audio if you can).

I know this is miles of your original budget for the source but I think it's just so conviniently awesome that you should consider it.

line level is low level amped... as you said, and based on a "speed read" the line level will be just as good as strait into pc or ipod soooo ya

2. so don't use ineffiecient headphones with line level (as in if you can drive your athm50s from an ipod you can do it with line level...)

3. my pc has a lot of interference so i bought the cheapest dac i could find that wasn't trash (30cad for a d3). I didn't want a dac i just wanted less interference

Seriously, you should know/research more before writing something out of the twilight zone.

This is a headphone/audio out:

IMG_1028_zps1f963674.jpg

It uses its internal headphone amp

This is the line out, via the 30 pin or lightning connector

IMG_1037_zps985cb0e1.jpg

This bypass the internal amp, and only use its pre-amp, at the line level output

Google this sentence: ipod headphone out vs line out.

Whatever, seems like OP already got his answer anyway. So yeah, believe what you want.

Then why the hell did you say usb out of pc bypasses internal amp?

Because i have listened to audio out of it and it sounds (generally the same) as via the jack... with headphones and iems.

Because it does bypass the amp, and the dac as well.

It's a digital signal, it is not amplified or changed at all by the onboard sound hardware at all.

so that would mean based on my research (assuming i'm not completely retarded and based on listening tests) line level is just fine for east to drive headphones then...
