Okay, I am going to be honest by saying that I am not an expert of hardware (hence this post :D ). Anyway, I am looking to building a new budgeted computer in the spring and need some help understanding the mechanics of Minecraft as this machine will be geared towards playing and streaming Minecraft and a few other games. I am a gamer who enjoys games like Minecraft and Sim games and after much research find myself still confused if I need to focus more on CPU, GPU, or RAM. Clearly, if I had the money, I would definitely get the best of all three, but I am an average person with only $750 (usd) to build my next machine. Just to give the idea where i am coming from, I am currently gaming on a Dell Inspiron laptop with an i3 & 4GB Ram. This build I hope will get me in the entry level and allow me to enjoy Minecraft more from the current 10-30 fps on extreme low settings. I do apologize if this post is put in the wrong section, just not sure where it would fit best :D

In my experience, CPU and ram speed makes the biggest difference.

If you start messing with shader packs and stuff like that at higher resolutions, GPU horsepower starts to kick in a bit.

In my experience, switching between integrated graphics and a dedicated graphics card in Minecraft brings me to the conclusion that you will at least need some sort of discrete graphics card in order to achieve a stable frame-rate above 30-60. I'm not completely sure what exactly you will need, but what comes to mind is a card in the GTX 200 series.

Minimum Requirements:
  • CPU: Intel Pentium D or AMD Athlon 64 (K8) 2.6 GHz
  • RAM: 2GB
  • GPU (Integrated): Intel HD Graphics or AMD (formerly ATI) Radeon HD Graphics with OpenGL 2.1
  • GPU (Discrete): Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT or AMD Radeon HD 2400 with OpenGL 3.1
  • HDD: At least 200MB for Game Core and Other Files
  • Java 6 Release 45

Recommended Requirements:
  • CPU: Intel Core i3 or AMD Athlon II (K10) 2.8 GHz
  • RAM: 4GB
  • GPU: GeForce 2xx Series or AMD Radeon HD 5xxx Series (Excluding Integrated Chipsets) with OpenGL 3.3
  • HDD: 1GB
  • Latest release of Java 7 from java.com

Software Requirements:
  • Minecraft Release 1.6 or newer. Older versions will need to be updated to current versions
  • Please note that some users experience issues playing Minecraft while using a mismatched version of Java for their operating system (32 or 64 bit), while using certain versions of Java 7, or while multiple versions of Java are installed

Thanks for the replies. I am intending to play with some texture packs, but as I prefer to get better fps over the looks of the game (let's face it, it's Minecraft :D ). I am planning on getting a discrete card, but wanted to know where to focus the budget to more than others. There are some good GPU's out on the market right now I am looking at thanks to the suggestions here.
