What are your In-car Camera Solutions?

drmelvin

Why do people spend like 300-500 dollars on an in car camera. Isn't it better to just get a used camera phone like the Galaxy S3 online for like 120 dollars & suction against your windscreen?

Most of these 'specialized' in car camera doesn't even offer 720p @ 30fps video recording, which makes it pointless for insurance claim in an event of an accident.

Let me know what are your personal solutions for in car camera.

For the cameras you want reliability, not something like 4K 120FPS. The specialised ones are definitely overpriced, but you'd be just as well off with a cheap dash cam as you would with an expensive one.

Hell, maybe you could strap on old laptop with a webcam to the dashboard and upload the footage as you go xD

I personally don't have one, but if I end up getting my motorbike, I'll definitely get one for my helmet that I can use in my car too.

Well for one, if you have a phone like the S3 right on your windshield, it makes your car more prone to a break-in.

I haven't gotten one yet. But when i get my next car i'll probably mount something like a Tsumara GT in it.

Front and rear facing cameras are a must.. Since i was rear ended two weeks ago and the month before that i was backed into by a saab...

Im getting a proper one because they have the "Save the last 10-30 minutes" button

Not much break-ins in Singapore. Maybe in the US, yes. You can easily detach the S3 & dump it in your glove box after you're done with the journey.

Alot of them record in a loop unlike smart phones. so whenever there is an accident you dont have to search through countless hours of tape. Oh and timestamps alot of them time stamp the footage for insurance claims.

I believe there are even 360 degree cameras on the market!

Camera looking out the windshield would be enough for me to claim insurance against those 'brake check' drivers.  :P

Maybe apps like this could be the solution for recording in a loop!

Well in any case, I'm not going to start defending the dashcam since I don't even use one. (Btw you still had 138 cases of car theft, so it's not zero http://www.police.gov.sg/stats/crimebrief2014.html). But I will say that dashcams also provide longer recording times than what a 64GB sdcard can provide on a phone. And they have bump detection. While putting the S3 into the glove box is easy, it is still an extra step. And yes that is a lazy excuse, but isn't everything?

I was backed into on the drivers side about a year ago. But i'll have to make do with the Tsumara. Since it's a front/rear camera. And it's pretty well priced.

Sometimes i sympathize with the brake checkers.. The car that crashed into the back of my car was driving waaay too close.

Not to mention that every damn audi driver just looooves to drive about an inch from your rear bumper..

the specialized in car camera record for only the last 30 mins or so. using a phone will absoloutley wreck your storage and require you to constantly delete video files.

Maybe the used phones like the Galaxy S3 can be a 'ghetto' solution.  ;)
