GTX 970 or wait for GTX 960?

Hi guys,

Planning to upgrade my current GPU from a 550 Ti to either a 960 or a 970, and I plan to keep the new GPU for around 2-3 more years (future-proof? probably) and should be able to max out games in 1080p.

I'm really not any expert on these things, but just wanted to know which card will be the "optimal" choice between the two (960 vs 970) for my current setup?

Should I wait for the 960, or will the 970 be more "future-proof" and "optimal" for my build?

Thanks guys!

Summary of my current build:

  • CPU - i5 3570k
  • MoBo - Gigabyte Z77X UD3H
  • RAM - 8GB
  • PSU - FSP Everest 600W
  • Current GPU - EVGA GTX 550 Ti

The 960 will be sold for less price than the 970, and it will probabily perform a bit better than the actual 770, while using much less power...

rig: i7 4770k @4.1Ghz (delidded), Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600Mhz, ROG Maximus VI Hero, Noctua NH-D14, EVGA GTX980SC, Samsung 850 EVO 500GB, Corsair SF600, self-built wooden Case, CoolerMaster QuickFire TK, Logitech G502, Blue Yeti, BenQ GW2760HS

If you're going to quote the OP use -snip- or select a useful section rather then quoting a huge post

I'm not sure how you want us to answer this, considering the fact that we have no idea what specs the 960 will have or what it'll cost. My answer? If you're willing to wait, then wait. If not, buy a 970.

Yeah.. maybe I'm just hyped after watching tons of unboxing videos and reviews of the 970, hahaha

But, my second problem is, will my current setup bottleneck the 960/970?

The 970 will not be bottlenecked in most situations. Let alone the 960.

Probably go for a gigabyte 970 G1 gaming but another good option thats a little cheaper would be a 290 and that beats the 970 in pixel rendering but thats all
