Are 2 980s overpowered for a 1440p 60 hz ips?

AmericanToto

So I want the ASUS pb278q 1440p, and the ASUS VG248QE 144 hz 1080p monitor, but are 2 gigabyte 980s overkill?

Yes, you could easily run 1 1440p monitor off of a single 980 and have room to spare.

Well, it depends. Really demanding games with intense AA will not be maxed out at 1440p with constant 60+fps, not even with a single 980. If you really want to crank up supersampling at that resolution you will need a LOT of extra power, 2 x 980s seem "reasonable" for that. One will do just fine with all other games and with less ridiculous AA though, and I personally would not get 2 of them even if I had the extra cash.

For most games yes. OC my GTX 980 can run 1440p between 40-96hz.

If you get framerate issues you can always reduce AA.

The hz depends on the monitor, hz being the refresh rate, aka maximum fps displayed.

One monitor could have a refresh rate of 60hz while another has one of 120hz, and the GPU being used would not change that.

I believe you meant to say between 40-96 fps, which would depend on the GPU/CPU.

typo.

I got my monitor set at 96hz and my games run between 40 (regular min) and 96 fps. Usually between 70-96 tho.

what about a 4k 60 hz?

Two GTX 980s OC would work.

You could probably do just fine at 4k 60hz for most games on a single 980, though two 980s would be better for it.

I know this is out of no where, but what is an acceptable response time? Is 6 ms?

ya but you'll have to turn down settings to achieve that on a single gtx 980.

Under 16ms of TOTAL lag is the standard for great.
16-32 is considered good.
Anything over 32 is considered poor.

Honest answer is there is no way to tell the actual response time from the manufactures statements. Each moniter has to be actually tested by a legitimate reviewer.

e.g.

if you want a good recommendation on a monitor than get the Qnix QX2710 with the Samsung PLS {IPS} panel and a single DVI input.
Colors and sharpness are excellent.
Overclocks to 96hz.
Only con is the backlight isn't 100% even but for the price most people are willing to overlook that issue.

350 on eBay for the pixel perfect version. .

depending on the games realy.

if you wanne max out crysis 3 on 1440p 60+ fps, you need a damm good GPU setup.

GTX980 SLI  will "probably" be capable of doing that..

Crysis 3 gets every gpu setup on its knees.

That game is just rediculous

What do you honestly think? If you want to get tons of screen tearing with v-sync enabled, go for 980's in sli.

one is plenty for a 1440p@60 screen. There are few games that fall under 60 fps with a single 980, maxed out.

I want 4k.

The 500 dollar 4k LCDs are TN panels so they look awful. Good IPS panels are over 1200 for 27"

You'll also want 2 980s for better and more stable frame rates. 1 980 will "work" but the FPS will borderline unplayable.

Total cost for just GPUs and moniter to go 4k will be 1500 min (before tax) for a TN panel and over 2500 for IPS.

Total cost to go 1440p is 850 for a qnix with 1 gtx 980.

So my personal opinion is its not worth the cost but if you want 4k then go 2 980s.
