Hey Newbie,

Steam OS is still in a very early build and you would really have to be savvy with Debian (linux distro that it runs off of) if anything were to go wrong. My roommate is a computer science major and he primarily uses Ubuntu. Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distro with the heaviest support. That being said a lot of applications will not be supported on Ubuntu:  ex. Adobe Photoshop, or pretty much any triple A game. If you're heart-set on trying Linux you may as well give Ubuntu a try.

Ubuntu is really a good choice. Very user friendly Linux OS! Go for it!  :)

Dude, do yourself a favor. Dump the extra cash into a higher end discrete GPU.

P.S. Drop the aftermarket heatsink and spend that cash into GPU as well (GTX 750 Ti or R7 265).

I dont think the processor comes with a cooler, thats why i added it

The G3258 comes with a cooler and its even enough to overclock it (the A6-6400k comes with a cooler too). A G3258 @ 4.5 GHz will absolutely destroy any APU or Athlon x4. Especially if you're rocking a GTX 750 Ti instead of a R7 250x. I would aim for Nvidia based cards if you plan on using Linux long-term. AMD drivers are absolutely piles of shart for Linux.

G3258 + MSI Z97 PC Mate

EVGA GTX 750 Ti

Crucial Ballistix

Crucial MX100 256GB

(G3258 + GTX 750 Ti) $439.96 vs (A6-6400k + R7 250x) $459.95 - Without the T4 cooler.

GTX 750 Ti vs R7 250x

For $10 more dollars you can throw the T4 back into the bunch as well to keep the G3258 extra cool.

AMD drivers aren't that bad. Haven't really had anything to complain about so far other than the fact that the installation process for the ones straight from their website instills very little confidence. That said nVidia's drivers weren't bad either. As for which Linux: try some. Most come on live USB images so you can try before you install. Ubuntu is best known and therefore most popular, but Unity is not the most configurable desktop evironment out there. So try if you like Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Kubuntu or Linux Mint better. Try installing GNOME on Ubuntu and see if you like it. My preference goes to Kubuntu because it's endlessly reconfigurable, and coupled with QTCurve it can be made to look and feel any way you like.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

Through the Additional Drivers application it's no problem. Tho installing ones directly from the website is a lost cause (wasn't able to get to desktop after a proper install of them).

That's true but when I first built my machine the drivers for Kaveri's r7 graphics weren't in the repo's yet.

I've been dual booting Ubuntu for windows 7 for a while now. I bascially use Ubuntu daily then just switch to Windows when I need to use some specific programs. Game wise, I really only play Dota 2 and CS:GO at the moment.. so that works great since they both run on Linux. I am running an Nvidia GTX 650 Ti ( hopefully upgraded some point soon ) and don't have any issues.  Just went straight to the nvidia site, downloaded drivers and installed them.. pretty simple process. I am not super savvy with Linux but Ubuntu is pretty straight forward.

CPU: i5 6500 | GPU: GTX 960 SSC | MOBO: Asus Z170m-Plus | RAM: 16GB DDR4 G.Skill | Case: Fractal Designs Node 804 | PSU: EVGA 750w

i forget to add

if you buy an APU, always buy an A8 or an A10 (and don't buy the A6 line or the A4)

APU = A10

I recommend Linux Mint as it's far snappier than Ubuntu. Some good starter programs that will come in handy is Cairo dock, Guake terminal, firefox, lm-sensors, and a music player. Don't forget to install graphics drivers. It should come with LibreOffice which is a good alternative to Microsoft Word. If you want, google docs also works great (cloud based). Then you can customize it to your liking with colors and themes. This is what mine looks like for example.

I've been using linux for about five years now and I always recommend Fedora to new users that are already some what tech savvy. In my opinion, Ubuntu is great for people who need something that will just work out of the box. Fedora is still very user friendly, but won't hold your hand the same way Ubuntu will, and, as a result, can be flavored to fit you better. Ubuntu comes with the Unity UI, which I am not a fan of. Although you can add a different UI, I found it almost impossible to remove Unity because so many of Ubuntu's necessary files are embedded into Unity's packages. Fedora is not like that, which is just one of many reasons why I find it better for newcomers of Linux. :)

I personally like Ubuntu over Linux Mint, don't get me wrong both are great distributions. Unity has matured a lot since its debut. I personally like the overall look and functionality of it. This is what my desktop looks like atm, I like to keep it simplistic.
