Hey guys, i'm new here, i'm looking to build this i already have case and psu.

I'm looking to get Linux but don't know what to get, i don't want SteamOS and i'm thinking about Ubuntu.

Is Ubuntu a good choice? Thanks!

Hey mate!

I've been running Linux occasionally for ten years and I've had Ubuntu as my daily driver for quite some time. This week though, I switched to Arch. If you are a new user however I'd recommend to go for one of the following Ubuntu derivatives. They use Ubuntu as their backbone but have different desktop environments. So, here we go:

Lubuntu or Xubuntu - If you want a clean and light user experience. (Desktop environment: LXDE or XFCE)

Linux Mint - If you pretty much want the original Ubuntu but doesn't like Unity. (Desktop environment: Cinnamon)

Ubuntu Mate - It is rumored to be the next "official flavor of Ubuntu". (Desktop environment: MATE)

Ubuntu - Nothing like the original, right? (Desktop environment: Unity)

Kubuntu - You like eye candy? KDE got eye candy. (Desktop environment: KDE)

What's great about Linux is that regardless of which derivative you choose of the above. You can turn everyone of them into each other. Me for instance, got Ubuntu 14.04 (stock Ubuntu, second to latest release) but hated Unity - so I installed Cinnamon. All of a sudden it looked like Mint. Then I got bored with desktop environments so I got i3wm and that's what I'm running on my Ubuntu and my Arch-install.

If there's anything else you want to know, ask!

Linux: The operating system with a CLUE; Command Line User Environment.
