Common misconception between theory and hypothesis

There's also a misconception between routine and habit.

From my physics class:

Theory - Well supported explanations of nature; does not describe nature.

Law - Well supported descriptions of nature; does not explain nature.

A theory =/= a guess.

The scientific theory that is evolution is an explanation as to how creatures today look compared to creatures long ago.

I'm a Christian, again, I will say this. And I agree with this.

I believe that God created the world and lit the fuse, and now we have biology, chemistry, & physics at play, with a programmer watching the debug menu.

Now, feel free to argue against me, but this is my belief, and I am adamant in it, as none of what I just said can be disproved.

Now, can everyone relax about this stuff? It is not religious suicide to pursue science, nor is it academic suicide to follow a religion.

That's an excellent point. However, it is an argument for deism, not necessarily theism.

No one could deny that there might be a "prime mover" of the universe. All we can say is that there is no evidence to support such a claim, and that the universe seems to function perfectly fine, and is perfectly well explainable, without that assumption.

The argument for theism requires a personal god who intervenes in our affairs, cares about us, what we eat, who we sleep with, and in what position -- to paraphrase Mr. Hitchens again.

To support a theistic worldview, you have all your work left ahead of you.

And to think, if humanity wasn't full of arse holes that where hung up on their own ideals this wouldn't even be a discussion.

I would point out that science does have accepted doctrines, they are called Theorems.

And it's a very sad world in which we have to explain this to the cavemen, not that it will matter, they will simply shake their sticks at us, fling poo, and go back to worshiping the lightning...

I'd have to disagree with you there.

Theorems are mostly found in mathematics. Occasionally you will find a physical "theorem", but in that case, it is identical to a "theory". And in either case, it's certainly not a doctrine.

I was speaking more along the lines of the fact that mathematical theorems are used as apart of science, or at least I would think they are.

Ah, true enough in that case. (Although I'd still hesitate to call a mathematical theorem a doctrine, as it's more of a logical deduction.)

Edit: changed "it" to "a mathematical theorem".

But it is.

Too Bad.

Just learn to accept and move on.

I would, except it is on both sides of the debate, and this is why humanity is taking forever to move forward.  Think of where we could be right now if humanity hadn't wasted the last two centuries at war and just put their resources into tech development and health/community services etc.
