New PC, RAM running low?

Hey, so I've been making a couple of threads as I was getting closer to getting my new PC. It's finally done and it's great. So thanks to everyone who helped me out. This is a cool forum. :)

Anyway, I got it home, and it works just fine but, I noticed, using Speccy, that my RAM are running at about half the advertised speed.

I'm not very tech savvy so I don't know if this is normal the same way it's normal that Harddisk don't have the full TB advertised etc.

Anyway, I've attached two screenshots.

The RAM I have are G.skill 2133 MHz, and as is clear, they are running at 1066 here. Why??

Oh and the "RAM.jpg" ignore the slot 4 I had opened, that wasn't for any particular reason. I figured slot 1 was fine.

You need to double the speed reported by those programs on DDR RAM, so they are running at the correct speeds as 1066 * 2 is effectly 2133.

You have to select the X.M.P profile in your motherboard bios, to access the bios depending on the motherboard will be to keep pressing either the 'del' or 'F2' key as soon as your pc starts to boot up.

How many people is it this week that doesnt know that the PC tells your half the speed because Its DoubleDataRate that is specified as e.g. 2133mhz.....

People...the OP already IS running with the X.M.P. Profile Enabled.

2133MHz 11-11-11-30-2T.

Your 2133MHz showing up as 1066MHz is normal.

DDR3 RAM is dual-pumped.

In your situation, the actual speed is 1066MHz, and the effective speed is 2133MHz. Exactly double.

For 1600MHz, you would see it running as 800MHz.

For 1866MHz, you would see it running as 933MHz.

For 2133MHz --> 1066MHz.

For 2400MHz --> 1200MHz.

I am? You need to "explain it like I'm 5" because my knowledge tells me that my RAM are 2133 and not 1060, or whatever they are at, now. So when you say "actual speed" that makes nosense to me, because to me the "actual speed" is the advertised 2133.

As mentioned in another mentioned post, DDR = "Double Data Rate".

The actual speed that the RAM is running is 1066MHz -- and this is being registered by the PC.

even for the new DDR4 RAM.

2400MHz effective = 1200MHz actual

3000MHz = 1500MHz.

DDR2 / DDR1. All the same.

Similarly in the VRAM found on graphics cards...

6000MMHz GDDR5 is really 1/4th of that = 1500MHz.

It's effective speed is 6000MHz, but the real speed it's operating at is 1500MHz.

It is just how the PC industry standard works.

Thank you, I saw the video and will attempt to do this now. I've never "play around with the BIOS" as suggests I do.

My CPU is watercooled but I don't really know how far I can OC it, safely, nor the RAM.

I don't undersatdn this. Yes, I'm a noob when it comes to tech, so I'm going to need you to explain this to me. "effective" going by the definition *is* the speed it's oprerating at. So how can the "effective" speed be 6000 when the speed it's running at is 1500? The effective speed would then be 1500?? I'm very confused right now.

Would you suggest I change anything? I'm currently in the bios and I see that it does indeed have an XMP running.

As in, how much could I overclock these 2133mhz ram safely and for them to be stable?

Exmaple: GTX 780 has a EFFECTIVE Memory speed of 6008MHz, the real / actual clock frequency is 1502MHz.

And a little quote directly from NewEgg. Proabably sums it up.

"The memory type for all current gaming grade video cards is GDDR5, which mostly runs at a real clock frequency of around 1000MHz up to around 1400MHz. GDDR5 uses what is called "quad pumped" technology that within one clock cycle can do 4 data transfers. Thus the effective memory clock, or data rate is 1000MHzx4 to 1400MHzx4. This makes comparing easier."

Your RAM is running at it's proper speeds, timings, and voltages. I don't see the need to modifiy anything -- unless you want to get your hands dirty with overclocking.

Regarding on how far you can overclock your RAM really depends.

It depends if the indiviudal RAM chips can be overclocked further.

It depends if your Memory Controller on your CPU can even be stable a higher RAM speeds.

Keep in mind, the maximum published RAM speed for the later Intel CPUs is 1600MHz. You running at 2133MHz alrady involves overclocking the Memory Controller (which is a part inside of the CPU).

Basically, totally depends if your CPU can handle it or not.

I'm assuming this only something that's necessary once the PC starts to struggle with games, which it doesn't right now, obviously.

Just out of curiosity, what would be a 'good' frequency to OC these at? 2400? 2600? Or even 3000? I've never done it so asking to learn.
