Fairly sure the 290x only has one advanage over the 970 and that is the wider memory bus and maybe some shader units?

 

The 970 is newer generation.  Lower power.  Higher speeds.  Likely a ton cooler as well.

 

970 just is a better card right now, not to mention cheaper.  Sounds like the way to go.

Stream Processors(AMD) and Cuda Cores(Nvidia) are not comparable having more of one doesn't mean one of them will perform better as the architectures are completely different. The 970 does however consume less power, produce less heat and is cheaper. It's also arguable that it's software suite is more interesting but that is going to depend on the individual's needs.
