Hey guys

My first gaming PC build is coming up very soon but I still have not picked out RAM for my build yet.

For reference my current and probably final build is following:

Please note that the Mobo is already in my possession and I would like to spend $70 on my RAM tops.
I want to go with 8Gb of RAM for now and then later upgrade to 16Gb so I would like to go with either 2x 4Gb or 1x 8Gb sticks. There's just so many manufacturers and products out there I don't know where to start my research.

Thanks in advance

My build: CPU:  i5-4670K Mobo: ASRock Z87 Extreme4 RAM: Kingston Fury Red Series 16GB GPU: Asus GeForce GTX 970 STRIX Case: Corsair Obsidian 750D

I'd go for some HyperX Fury, just because they look sexy as fk

Closer-Look-21.jpg

Also, keep in mind that you will need to flash your motherboard BIOS for it to be compatible with the 4690K.

So you'll have to have another Z87 compatible CPU to use to do so.

The cheapest 2 x 4GB 1600Mhz or 1866MHz CL9 ram kit you can find.

Reputable brands: Corsair, G.Skill, Kingston, AData, Curcial

+1 and -1

+1 for the kit

-1 for the brands. Much like PSUs brand means next to nothing with RAM. An overpriced Corsair 8GB 1600MHz CL9 kit is going to perform almost exactly the same as some cheap ass generic 8GB 1600MHz CL9 kit.

You realize that you're taking a Z87 mb with a Haswell refresh, right?

You might want to find a z97 motherboard for the 'z97' cpu.

No I did not notice this since I do not know what this means... Can you guys help me out here?

You need to look into motherboard chipsets and CPU architectures. Basically, the CPU you have chosen is of the Haswell Refresh architecture, which needs a Z97 motherboard or a flashed Z whatever motherboard. I'd recommend getting an MSI Z97 PC MATE.

He/she already has the Extreme 4, so buying a whole new motherboard is't the best option.

You'll need to have another Z87 compatible CPU, because I'm fairly sure that motherboard doesn't support BIOS flashes without it unlike some high end OCing motherboards.

You could just get he 4670K and be done with it, it may be 1 year older but they are basically the exact same CPU, though the 4690K will overclock better because of the Devils Canyon improvements.

Z87 is the outgoing Haswell architecture (for chips like the i7-4770k & i5-4670k) Z97 Devils canyon is the new architect for the newer Haswell-Refresh Chips (i5-4690k & i7-4790k)

I think it actually will be 100 series chipset motherboards, which has the codename Sunrisepoint. (Z170/H170) It is a wiki about it though so yeah can't trust it all off course.

If you want to use an 8 series chipset mb you'll need to update BIOS to use Haswell Refresh CPUs, you'll need a normal Haswell CPU to update it.

If you get a 9 series chipset mb you won't have any problems

He/she already has the Extreme 4, so buying a whole new motherboard is't the best option.

Get an LGA 1150 Celeron to get the BIOS update, and then flash it

Thanks so much for the help guys! I'm gonna see if I can get access to a Z87 CPU if not I will either try to return the Mobo (I bought it on sale a couple days ago) or get the 4670K.
