Well, I finally have to get around to deciding what I want to do after high school. I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight on Network Administation as a career.

My questions:

  • If anyone knows, what is the job market for Network Admins like in Canada? (I don't trust the 90% rate I'm getting from all of the colleges I look at...)
  • If anyone here works or has worked as a Network Admin, could you give your opinions and advice?

Thanks in advance! :)

There is a lot of factors to being a network Administrator, Like is depth when you are building a network to fit your environment, Configuring. I think it is a grate place to get a job in. I know many Network admins and they are the coolest people, they know the ins and outs of firewalls and finding the smallest problem before it even effects anyone. As much as i know, its just a lot of work in the start and you have to have all your certificates for Cisco and companies like that.

I personally do this kind of thing but more advanced and more the hardware side. I am in charge of Network Infrastructure at a Business in London. I basically run all of the servers and all of the wiring and all that kind of stuff. I basically build the backbone of the network.

Lowest end IT job you can have, its quite fun though if the size of the network is big enough and if you are interested in stuff rather than bits and bytes.

Lowest end IT job? You know without them the rest falls apart right?

As for the OP, sure you don't see the light of day as much as a regular sysadmin but you can get the bucks for sure. Ever hear about the BOFH in San Fran  a couple years ago, he had the whole city by the proverbial nuts and all he was was a Network Admin, a very experienced one but a Network Admin none the less.

There's a ton of cool stuff you can do and work on, but it really depends on where you end up at. The networks behind the scenes can be as intricate as anything else at an organization if not the most intricate, they can also be the worse but that would be up to you and your budget :D , get your Cisco on if you want to be a Network Admin. (yea there's other brands but its the biggest).

I just do Network Admin a bit if a very little bit, enough to get my work done without having to bug others for my custom setups.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.

Network Administration being the lowest? Uhh, Tier 1 support is pretty much the entry... NetAdmin is pretty high up there, no less important than systems administration to be honest...
