which is better CPU?

Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

Editing video won't work well on a 4790k

video editing works on any CPU. even an i5 can edit videos perfectly...

the only advantage of having more cores is that it will take less time to render.

for some people spending $1000 on a processor is not worth 10 minutes less rendering time, for others it is.

if OP is not doing rendering as a job on a daily basis, it would be a omplete waste of money to buy a 5960x. a 4790k will edit perfectly fine for him.

Hello guys i'm kinda confused i wanted the best suited CPU for heavy editing and thanks for them they gave me I7 5960x 8 cores 3.0 GHz and i saw a I7 4790k 4 cores 4.1 GHz! which is faster? and what's "Cache"? because i think it is important

For gaming, fewer stronger cores is better (ideally 4 strong cores is the sweet spot).

On the other hand, for editing you want multiple cores. So for editing a 5960x will SEVERELY outclass a 4790k.

However, in gaming, a 4790k is likely to be faster than a 5960x (unless of course you can achieve the same overclock on both, in which case they'll perform virtually the same).*

*in most games. Keep in mind, theres only a small handful of games that can utilize more than four cores anyway.

Editing video will be fine on a 4790k but if you are editing daily or as a profession a 5960X would suit you better, as video editing programs tend to work with moar lower-clocked cores. High-clocked fewer cores are more suited for gaming. Cache is basically the CPU's small internal memory where it stores the most frequently executed instructions, it's not really a big help and won't make a great difference.

Cache is a type of memory that is built into the processor. Because of that, its extremely fast, even faster than RAM. While yes, it is important, cache is always a set amount on each processor. Its not like you'll find an i7-5960X with more cache than another -5960X. So it won't really be a factor in your decision.

Naturally the i7-5960X with its 8 physical cores (or 16 threads) will obliterate an i7-4790K anywhere those cores will get used a lot (such as rendering), but its also three times the price. I really wouldn't recommend anything more than an i7-4790K or i7-5820K unless you're a professional in whatever sort of editing you do.

Well honestly I think I misworded my post, I meant that a 4790k would render fine but not as quickly as a 5960x or other Extreme Edition, I have edited on an i5-550M before and it went perfectly fine, I'll go fix my post now.

i'm going for the heavy stuff like AF,Premiere Pro,Photoshop,Cinema 4d,Maya,etc and i think i want the 5960x more because i'm gonna render heavy stuff right? i want to do other stuff like watch a video perfectly fine or Texting someone on skype without any freezing and thanks

you're right i was used to I3 CPU i didn't know the PC stuff just watchin youtube and sleep and repeat then when i put my hand on my new laptop i7 3537U two cores i think and my expectation for the I7 5960x is high my mind was blown honestly because of the I7 3537U don't judge me i was used to the I3 and i think the price for me worth it

An i7-4790K for a third of the price (or even i7-5820K for less than half) is still an absolute beast and will perform very well in all of those things. But if you're a professional, making your living using things like Maya, Premier Pro, etc., taking a few extra minutes on every render times multiple renders per day can add up to a significant amount of income lost. That's when it starts to make sense to spend $1000 on a processor.

If you really want to spend that much, by all means do so. But if you're a hobbyist or amateur or just learning the software, you could do very well with a much cheaper processor. Any of these i7's are spectacularly powerful, its just a matter of how powerful in these specialized workloads.
