I am going to build my first computer soon and I am struggling to choose a graphics card. I was thinking about the r9 270x but everybody always talks about nvidia so I am not sure. My budget is £150.

Any chance of an extra £100 ?

Thanks, when it comes out I will find out the shipping costs. If it is too much I won't be able to get it.

Nvidia doesn't really offer anything that's very competitive in that price range. The GTX 750 Ti is expensive for its price and much slower than the 270X, while the GTX 760 is quite a bit more expensive and occasionally even falls behind the R9 270X in certain games. In all I don't know if I'd really want to recommend any Nvidia cards under the GTX 970 right now at current prices.

A 270 or 270X, overclocked, is a pretty good choice for that budget I think. Next up would be the R9 280.

Ok thanks. Is there a large increase for price to performance from the 270x to the 280?

Using scan.co.uk (the only British electronics e-tailer I personally know of :P):

The R9 280 seems to start at around £150 including VAT. I see an R9 270X's starting at about £135, but most in the 140's. That actually makes the R9 280 look like a great deal to me. For that little extra you get a much faster GPU with 3 GB of VRAM on a 384-bit bus, and even that is cheaper than the slower GTX 760. Might depend on where you buy, though.

^ This is actually a review of the newer and slightly overpriced R9 285, but the R9 280 and R9 270X both appear in the benchmarks. That should give you a concrete idea of where the cards stand in relation to one another.
