What did I do?!?!

Go to solution Solved by ImASpermWhale,

Sounds like more of a motherboard issue. Reseat your RAM. If not, sounds like a dead mobo. You could also try reseating your CPU if you have extra thermal paste.

Yup that was the problem. My ram must have been unseated. Thanks for all the help everyone!

So I think I may have destroyed my hard drive!  :(

Today I was organizing my wires, and I unplugged my hard drive and noticed there’s another place to mount the hard drive. I attempted to install the drive, but noticed the SATA cable wasn’t long enough to reach the mobo. I reinstalled it in the original place (this is where I think I went wrong.... More on that in a second), plugged allthe wired in a fired up the computer…well….tried to. Instead of turning on, my mob started beeping at me. The drive is spinning (slowly) (I can hear it), but the computer refuses to turn on. While reinstalling the hard drive I accidentally scratched (very lightly, but I can see a scratch) the exposed circuit board section. Did I kill my hard drive? Am I just doing something wrong?

Please Help! :(

1. check all connections.

2. double check all connections.

3. try checking bios configuration for hdds.

4. try clearing CMOS.

did you unplug it while the computer was turned on?

No. Power was completely turned off to the computer.

Did you plug the drive into the the same port that it used to be plugged into?

Can you get into the BIOS?

Yup. I didn't even unplug the SATA cable from the mobo. As for getting into BIOS....I have no idea how....

1. check all connections.

2. double check all connections.

3. try checking bios configuration for hdds.

4. try clearing CMOS.

How do it clear CMOS? Sorry, I'm a noob.

Take that little battery on the mobo that looks like a quater out ant put it back in. You need to turn off the computer before doing this. After you do that, turn the PC back on. Could you post a picture of the PCB on drive?

So I did that (with the PC unplugged) and tried....and nothing....still beeping. I'm not sure you'd bee able to see the scratch with a picture, it's literally a hair's width.

a picture might help.
Try pointing out where on the PCB it is scratched.

Hey ,

Do you have another computer where you can try the drive on? Maybe run a chkdsk /r or WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool for checking the S.M.A.R.T. status as well as for any bad sectors (Here's a link: http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=810〈=en )?

Also, those beeps are error codes that your BIOS is making to tell you what's wrong. If you tell us your MOBO/BIOS/computer and what beep codes is it making, we can try and identify the problem (e.g. 4 longs beeps or 1 short and one long, etc.).

If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^

Uhhh....No. I don't have another computer. And I don't actually know the MOBO. The computer is like a 4 year old word processing computer so it's nothing fancy. The two beeps are just one short one every 5 or 6 seconds.

Ok. In that case, unplug the hard drive, then try booting. You might also unplug everything except the monitor, keyboard, and mouse from the computer. After that, try going into the motherboard's BIOS and fiddling with the boot order.

What should I change in the boot order?

I should also mention that his is the only hard drive for the computer, and therefor has the OS on it.

Well if you unplug everything out of the back of the computer except the monitor, keyboard and mouse, it won't try and boot from anything back there. I've got a USB memory card reader that prevents my PC from booting because it trys and boot from the memory card reader, so unplug everything but the bare essentials, and unplug the scratched hard drive, power it on and see if it still beeps like it is now. If it doesn't been like it is now, you need a new hard drive.

Nope. I unplugged it and it still beeps, and I can't enter BIOS.
