Ok bit of info on my custom system, sabertooth z87, gtx 770 evga superclocked. 8gb ram, 212 evo heat sync, i5 4670K

link to my exact gpu http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=193_1486&products_id=24725

ok so i was playing some battlefield 4, ultra settings which my gpu handles quite well, never really dipping below 45 frames and thats only on some maps when all the things are happening (bf4 is the most intensive game i play) and i started to smell a burning type smell, so i left the game running with my spawned, pulled my side panel off, and there was the smell from my case but it is more dusty smelling then anything, i bring up HWmonitor, and im running at 60c or 140F, played for 5 mins, tab out and im at 69c 156F.

is this safe temp ranges? should there be anything on the card i can check visually.

room temp: roughly 15c 59F @ 77% humidty (going by the news)

Have HWmonitor open in the background and play for an hour. If your temps are below 80C then there is nothing to worry about. I like to stay below 70C but that's just me. Staying below 80C will just not affect things like life expectancy or motherboard VRM temps a lot.

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

okay, thank you for the help, if anyone else has some things theyd like to add id appreciate it a lot =)

Nvidia cards are designed to run up to 80/85c, as long as you are below that you are fine, if you are worried about the card temp adjust your fan curve with Precision X or MSI afterburner. I'm guessing you have the ACX design, my cards with a little adjusting never go over 65 with about 50-60% fan speed.

and yes i have the acx design, could you put a screenregion of your curve for me perhaps?

I use Precision X, but they are both about the same interface, I can't sent the curve due to being at work, I would leave the starting point where it is and click points on the curve so that it is smooth up to about 85c, around there you want your fan speed higher because that is when the card will start throttling. how fast you want it to get there is up to how much noise you want to deal with

best guess -

30-35(idle for me) my fan is around 30%

50 - 45% ish

60-70 - 60% ish

75 - 80% ish

85 - 90% ish

noise isn't a big deal to me but i'm running SLI 780's so I set my curve pretty aggressive and it works
