Best direction for a public cloud service?

Just one for friends and family where they can login and store files, like dropbox.

Any clue as to what software I should use (that is actually good and possibly easy to set up)? I already have a build ready.

I was talking about some kind of software to use your computer as a server..

One run by yourself and you/other people can log into like dropbox

 

edit 2: i already tried owncloud, looking for something better 

 

edit 3: pretty much looking for an alternative to owncloud - it's glitchy and files dissapear.. security isnt that great as well

There are tons.  Sugarsync, Box, Skydrive, Google Drive, Ubuntu One, Copy, Tresorit...  And those are just the ones I'm signed up for.  :lol:

Google Drive is pretty nice.

Would Filezilla (or some other FTP software) be sufficient? Or does that get too messy with an FTP client?

Haha was thinking you meant something like that but I wasn't sure.

 

I don't know much about server setups.  But one thing you can do is set up a VPN with LogMeIn Hamachi, or something similar, and simply use file sharing within Windows to share files and folders across this virtual LAN.  That's what I would do at least.

Set up an ftp server on your computer? I think Linus had a video on how to do that using FileZilla.
