So since it sounds like my Seagate 2tb is failing

I have to get a new drive (to backup data) so that i can RMA my Seagate. I just don't know what to pick. I need at least 2 Tb. I'm using the drive as half storage, half gaming drive, using 2 partition at aprox 1 tb each.

I'm a long time fan of Western Digital but I find their drives a bit too expensive. I had a WD blue that lasted for over 5 years, but unfortunately the only make blues up to 1 TB.. I have also been looking at Hitachi and Toshiba drives but I'm not really sure what to pick.

Ah of course.. By hitachi i meant HGST which has been bought by WD yes :D

Isn't the WD Red primarily used for NAS/Servers or will they work fine in a desktop environment? I've heard nothing but great things about them. Especially the fact that they are very quiet and doesn't vibrate much is a plus in my book.

A WD Red 2TB here in Denmark is 699 DKK or roughly $120

Hey msh,

Sorry to hear about your problem. Sadly, drives do fail.
It's good to hear that people are happy about WD drives. As you said, WD Blue series are produced up to 1TB. I would suggest checking out WD Black series which would be good for your needs. They work faster than WD Blue and are produced up to 4TB. Here's a link: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=760

As @MoDtEc pointed out, WD Red are also a good solution but they are indeed designed for NAS/RAID environments. They would work in a regular desktop, though.

I've seen lots of people still putting HGST drives in their builds so I would say that's an option too.

You could always get two separate WD Blue drives and not worry about failures that much as if you use them independently, if one fails, the data on the other would still be perfectly safe, unless you put them in a RAID.

Hope that helps,

Captain_WD.

I would recommend picking up a WD green for your needs. Physically, as far as anyone has been able to tell WD green's are identical to Red's, the difference being in the firmware. I honestly doubt you need the slightly different firmware the Red's have as your using it as a regular storage and not in a raid or NAS. Although, if you wanted to pick up a Red it will work perfectly fine for you with no issues, it will just be slightly more expensive then a green.

My only concern about the Greens is the head parking that they had issues with some time ago.. However maybe it's not a bad idea to get one anyway. I expect the Seagate RMA to go through and get a new drive that doesn't fail after 3 months.

Btw is the greens 5400 or 7200 rpm? I cant seem to find that information anywhere :P

I haven't heard of anyone having problems with the newer models, but it is something to keep in mind. Also the reason you can't find set RPM speeds for greens is because like the Red's, they don't have one. They max at 5400 rpm, but the firmware is able to dynamically change the RPM of the drive to balance heat, power savings, and performance.
