980 performance from a 970?

I've read articles of people OC the 970 on air to about 1500mhz(at around 55 degrees celcius on full load) and it almost outperforms the 980 for a cheaper price. I was wondering if this is actually true and possible to achieve.

Yes it is.  An OC'd 970 is roughly the performance of a stock 980.  55 degrees on full load is BS unless watercooled.  65-70 is more realistic for most cases.

Agree mines OC at 1500 as well and i get about 70 with the stock cooling at full load and up to 77 if its a hot day but not higher

Wouldn't be that different TBH, although Gigabyte's one can definitely cool a lot more than the Strix.

The highest temp my G1 Gaming 970 has seen is 67c. That is F@H 24/7 @ 1550MHz. Ambient plays a big role as well. My room is usually 18c or lower.
