Hey Guys,

I'm building a cheap editing computer for my good friend. He will be using Sony Vegas and your normal computering thing, internet and Facebook and other minimal tasks.

Here's my question should I save money and put it toward the build or goes with Windows? The only reason I'm debating this is because he is not that tech savvy and I don't be able to help him all the time in Linux. Is there any Linux OS that is as simple as Windows, that will also run Sony Vegas and other simple programs

Thanks Guys!

Ubuntu is simple, and it may be possible to run Sony Vegas through WINE/Playonlinux. May be finicky to set up though.

Go with Windows, it's the safer option.

plenty of linux distributions are user friendly... if i were you , i'd tell him to do some research for programs that are similar to sony vegas for linux.

Cinelerra, Kdenlive, PiTiVi, lumiera - to name a few. All non-linear editors similar to Vegas/Premiere. Couple of them combine features of Premiere and After Effects.

The only problem with that is that he spent money on Sony Vegas and he is a cheap ass (hinse the cheap computer)

Go with Windows. Linux can be a pain to a person who's never used it.

What's your intended budget for the build?

Wasn't it a $400 build? By the way, which parts did you end up using? If he is cheap, I'd recommend the latest version of Ubuntu (linux) because it's free, which could save you $100. You'd have to know how to read basic code to install programs in Ubuntu, but luckily many post guides on how to do it. It may not be as simple as Windows' Run, save, accept terms and agreement, next, install, and finish to install programs, but most post the code for you to copy and paste into the command line to install software. Once you get used to it, it'll be the best of Mac and Windows combined for free. The thing is most software was actually first developed in Unix based software such as Ubuntu, which means it's not impossible to run games and Sony Vegas Pro on Ubuntu. There are many guides on youtube showing you how to run Vegas on Ubuntu, although it may be outdated, the process will stay the same.
