NZXT H440 Airflow When Using Crossfire

Hey Guys

 

Not long ago I brought another HD 7870 XT to run in crossfire with my current one, I put it into my case and all was good. I started playing some games and saw some really good performance results, then after a few minutes of playing the games would freeze and crash. I checked the temps of the cards and they were running into the high 80's, with one single card it would never go above 70c under load. I relised it was crashing becasue of over heating so I took the side panel off my case and put the fan speeds to 100% on both cards and it did't crash, but there must be a better way to keep my temps down. This is making my crossfire setup almost unusable, I have 3 stock 120mm NZXT fans in the front blowing air out. And one stock NZXT 140mm fan in the top blowing air into the case. Right after it had crashed one time, I took the side panel off and felt a huge amount of very hot air stuck in the top area of my case with nowhere to go.

Your fan orientation is very likely the issue; front fans are typically intake and top are typically exhuastt.

Your fan orientation is very likely the issue. Front and top fans are typically exhaust.

So all of the fans in the case, except the 120mm for my water cooler. Should be pulling air out of the case ?

Use the three front fans as intake fans and all the others as exhaust. Then take the front panel off and run everything with fans at 100% and see what your temps are. Then throw the front panel back on and do the test again. If theres a dramatic difference then get high static pressure fans.

Go one step at a time. Flip your fans around and go from there.

Your card is crashing at only 80c? that sucks. Ive had amd card run in the high 90's before just shutting down not crashing. You''l want to bring air from the front and exhaust it out the back and top.

Reference cards are best used in cases with relatively limited airflow - h440 being a prime example. Something to consider next time around.

Buy 3 SP Fans for intake. If you want to dissipate heat out of the case faster, get 2 additional SP fans for top exhaust. Then at the top rear exhaust any 140mm fan would do. My setup uses the stock 3 intake fans, then i have 2 SP fans at top as exhaust. When playing casual games(Dota 2, etc.) 77c tops. When playing maxed out settings crysis-like games 86c tops.

That's what I am thinking of doing, would it make a difference that all my case fans are plugged into the fan hub on the back of the motherboard tray ?  In terms of how fast they spin.

Performance edition are noisy as hell. Its up to you though. But i suggest using SP120 on top as exhaust.

I don't mind noise as I was fine using my GPU at 100% fan speed with the side panel open :P, I think I will get 2 SP120 for the front and leave one stock 120 there for now. And I am deciding between 2 AF140 quite or 2 more SP120 at the top.

You'll feel the difference of SP to AF in a H440. So i suggest go all SP. It can push/pull air in tight spaces so well that you'll feel the heat coming out of your top exhaust. :)

I have have brought four SP120's, two in the front with one stock 120. And two in the top with another stock 120, at some point I want to replace the two stock fans left in the front and top :)
