Nope ,you'd have to reinstall it from a cd/usb.

Find a Windows 8.1 ISO online and use the laptops activation code on it. If you try and use the laptops hard drive without a full re-install, odds are it will bluescreen before it can boot.

what a ISO?

 

Its a full virtual copy of a CD/DVD that can be mounted onto a blank disc.

I have used many old drives in my current builds. My guess is yes it would work, it may say it isn't a genuine copy, yet that just requires the product key.

 

You can use any drive as secondary in new or other systems. Thats not any problem. Booting from drive that has been taken off another system is trickier. Most times you get boot loop or BSOD after windows logo. With laptops (integrated drivers) you simply can't use one drive with OS with another piece of hardware. At least with windows on it.

I understand that, I was just stating from personal experience which I have had no issue with installing windows on my laptop, then building a computer and needing everything from the laptop.
