Like the Watergate scandal. That is where the gate comes from.

it's a reference to the Watergate scandal in the 70's

It's probably refering to Watergate, a big political scandal.

So putting the end "gate" to something, make it seem like a big scandal.

 

It's like the way people put the suffix "holic" on something to say they are "addicted" to something, like chocoholic.
