Best way to play AOE 2 online

So i want to play AOE 2 HD edition with my friend (he is in his house), but it´s been years since the last time i played this game online (i remember using hamachi). Is there a newer/better way of doing this?

If you both own the game you can just play online through the game client. The only issues I ever had with it was terrible lag and occasional sync errors.

Every loud bang is a lesson learned.
