I've done some searching already but I couldn't find anything like this:

Is there such a thing as a smartphone case that would fit like a regular phone case, but connects via the 3.5mm audio jack which would add more/better speakers.  Maybe there would be a mini sub-woofer on the back or something.

Does such a thing exist already? Is it a good Idea? Is it even possible?

I think this would be great to fix the iPhone's (and many others) problem of only having bottom/rear facing speakers. Also, it could fix most phone's problem with generally terrible on-board speakers.

It would be difficult without making the case around 1/4 - 1/2cm thick on one side of it :/

There should be a phone case that dispenses mayo directly into one of your major arteries.

I'd buy the shit outta that

Don't a bunch of cases do that anyway? And can't you make speakers pretty darn thin? I don't know about a sub-woofer being that thin, but I'm not a expert on the subject either.

I remember seeing one of those for the PSP... Not sure for iPhone though...

Here are the challenges that I see:

  • Form: The phone would lose its form...
  • Power: You'd want to have auxiliary power if you want the speakers to be powerful enough...
  • Acoustics: Small speakers in small enclosures rarely sound good...
  • Competition: There are many portable speakers on the market...
  • Durability: Can it withstand some abuse? Speakers are fragile...

Once you've overcome those challenges you've got yourself a pretty decent product...

Thanks for the insight! I can definately see the challenges with this now.

If you'll be designing it for iPhones with the lightning connector, I think you can use that...

Let me be clear, I'm not designing anything. I'm just wondering about the concept.

Actually, is there anyway one can suggest product ideas to manufacturers?

None that I know of...

I'm just having fun with thinking of product designs... It's a good idea imo...
