FX-8320 VS i7 860 (Benchmark results)

Luke

This test was to compare the gaming performance of a FX-8320 versus the older i7 860 with both clocked at the same speed. Both processors are at 2.8Ghz flat with turbo and all power saving features in the bios disabled. I could have overclocked the i7 860 to match the 8320's speed but i figured downclocking the 8320 to match the i7's stock speed would do the same job.

The FX-8320 has a higher max overclock at 4.5Ghz compared to 4.0Ghz on the i7 but as you can see from the gaming benchmarks and the 3D Mark physics score the i7 performs better clock for clock. It seems the conclusion from this would be that if the CPU's are matched in speed the i7-860 will win but when both chips are overclocked the FX-8320 will likely pull ahead.

Interesting. I'd rather have the higher lows at the cost of an fps or two at the highs.

This isn't even a sidegrade, it's pretty much a downgrade.

I actually went from the 8320 TO the i7-860 lol.

I sold my friend my FX-8320 and was planning on just using the i7-860 as a temporary setup until i get a new CPU/Motherboard but after running some benchmarks i was surprised by how capable this chip still is and i'll probably stick with it until i actually need something better.

Oh yea me too for sure. The difference between a couple FPS (especially max FPS) is almost unnoticeable but mins are a different story.

I don't think anyone saw this...

Saw it. Which no one does. The OP needed to justify going intel to himself and everyone else too.

He also gave up performance with the very slow ram. A number of those scores will come up nicely with decent 1866 CL10(or lower CL) ram.

The 8320 @ 3.5/4.0 stock would likely pull out ahead when compared to the 860 @2.8Ghz/3.5Ghz stock but i honestly don't think it would be much. I overclocked the 860 to 3.9Ghz last night and it was on par with the 8320 @4.3Ghz and still beating it in most cases.

I have much faster memory. I used the same in both systems for the sake of the comparison. The goal here was not to get the most FPS i could it was just to compare the chips against each other when clocked at the same speed.
