Hi all

I've recently upgraded my moniter to the ROG swift, which I love, but my poor old GTX 780 is strugging to make the most of the 144hz at the higher resolution.

With the release of the 900 series cards I can't decide what to upgrade to. The options I'm looking at are,

  1. Buy another GTX 780 for SLI, as they are now quite cheap and I could pick one up for around £200ish second hand. Also bear in mind I only have a AX760i PSU which might not be powerful enough for another GTX 780 which would mean possibly upgrading that too (I've done some internet research and cannot find a definite answer).
  2. Sell my GTX 780 and buy 2 GTX 970 for SLI. This would cost me about £550 and im fairly sure a AX760i can easily handle two 970s.
  3. Sell my GTX 780 and but a single GTX 980, which would cost me about £450. Although im not convinced that a single card is powerful enough for what I want which is to max out games at 2560x1440 without my fps taking a beating (GTX 980 owners please correct me if i'm wrong).

Does anybody with these setups have any advise that would help me decide?

I think a single 980 or a 780Ti is far enough. My 780Ti handle very nicely at max setting a resolution of 3440*1440.

I'd go for the dual 970's, but that's my personal choice.

Mah Build:  CPU: Intel i7-7700K COOLING: NZXT Kraken X52 GPU: Asus Strix GTX 1080 MOBO: Asus Strix Z270F RAM: 16GB GSKILL TridentZ RGB 3000

Well the 780 only has a tdp of 250w, double that so 500. That leaves 250 for your CPU and any oc, I would go with a second 780 and possibly upgrade the PSU later if you find it in inadequate. I think it would be a lot less hassle all around, although the 970 is better but I think its within a margin that can be dismissed easily enough.

Thanks for your replies.

I think I like the sound of dual 970s the most although it is the most expensive option and another 780 could give similar performance for a lot less cost, but might mean buying a new PSU and create cooling issues...

My only worry with a single 980 is although its seriously quick some games, watch dogs for example, I don't think can be maxed out without SLI. I remember when I tried to turn on TXAA when I still had a 1080p moniter and my GTX 780 simply couldn't handle it. The GTX 980 can't be THAT much more powerful than the 780 can it?

No it won't be enough on its own to run something like TXAA at really high fps maxed. SLI is generally a better option for high fps high settings as you end up forking out huge $$$ for a single card that can compete.

my thoughs exactly. I think SLI is definitly the way to go especially now i have a g sync moniter which should hopefully sort out any stuttering and other issues that come with multi gpu setups.

I think i'll try to get a second 780 off ebay at a good price but failing that i'll just get a couple of 970s. I'm really vain about my rigs appearance so it would have to be 2 of exactly the same card, which is a asus 780 dc2, which leaves me limited options...
