Bob here, needing a new computer really bad. I think I got my current dell around 2006. I want to get into gaming hardcore. I would like your help in building a computer, actually more with helping pick out parts that I need, without going overboard. My intuition says just get the asus 99 deluxe, the pentium 5960x and titan z. That should ensure any game I throw at it will do just fine. However, I know that's not the best way to go, plus it would cost as much as a new car. Please help me out in a nice way, I'm not a computer expert. I've never built a computer, I want my first build to last for some years playing the latest and greatest games on ultra settings. I don't need any video rendering stuff, I'm only using this build for gaming and watching movies. I might tinker with OC, a part of me says stay away from that to prevent hurting the parts, it is an option I want to have in the mix, in case I get brave. I don't know enough to be for or against nvidia and AMD. Whichever performs better for my build is fine. I do like ASUS but I have nothing set in stone. I want a 4k monitor, but since I'm still using a crt monitor just HD is going to be freakin' huge. I like LG but again if you recommend something else for this and that reason I'll listen. I've done some research but I'm just not understanding as much as I would like. I'll say my budget is 2 thousand. Even though I have nothing saved, 2 grand is what I could potentially save up. Obviously if I can play games like far cry 3 with ultra settings on a $500 build that would be much better. I know the future is uncertain but given some educational guesses I want my computer to probably be able to play any game that is likely to come out in the next year or 2, before having to upgrade. So going a little over kill on games now, is something I think should be done. I don't care how the computer looks, I don't care for LED lights and fan control dials. Plain is better to me. I'm not against water cooling I'm just kinda uneasy about putting water in my computer, I would rather stick with a fan heatsink. That's all I can think of to help you to get a feel for what I'm asking for. I made a part's picker list please don't laugh. I got what I think would be good, but I'm sure it probably needs some different things. If you wouldn't mind telling me things like, get this because of this. That would help greatly. For example get the R9 280 because it can play every game in ultra and doesn't cost 3000 like the titan z does.

Thank You in advance.

That's a pretty solid build but you don't need an i7 for gaming. Can you tell me your maximum budget and where you live please.

Maximum I would spend is 2000 and that's a lot to part with. But I definitely think it beats buying a console. I live in Texas.

Yeah, I'm with these guys on this. Even an old Intel i5 2500K does well even now.

You could get a GTX 980 with that $2000 budget.

And here's a little article from anandtech about i5 vs an i7 in games.

You can bark like a dog, but that won't make you a dog.

You can act like someone you're not, but that won't change who you are.

Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart

How I plan my builds -

Spoiler

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

My thought process behind the added fan was to ensure positive air pressure in the case and prevent dust from getting sucked in. I have heard good things about the noctua fans and wanted to see what they were like it's not really needed I guess.

meh, dust will get in anyway, the fan filters will have way more effect then 1 extra intake

PSU wattage is still surplus to requirements, I don't think you will need another case fan as the case comes with 3 preinstalled. Also what is with the blu ray od? I don't think as a gamer that you will be needing that.

With a budget of 2000 for a gaming machine I would have to choose between two different way :

1- Next gen PC with i7 on X99 with 8gb DDR4 and something like a GTX 970 (GPU dépens on how many $ you still have).

Or :

2- i5 4690k on z97 platform un wich case you will have enough money to get a SLI of 970 or one GTX 980.

What do you think would be better for a gaming PC ?

Life is short, but not a day is lost !

@bobflanders86 this is $100 over your budget but I don't really have time right now to get it under budget, although I'm fairly sure I could if I tried. Maybe some other kind soul could "finish it" for me.

Note that this is way more than you 'need'. I included a 1440p monitor because you're wasting a GTX 980 if you don't go 1440p or triple 1080p screens. However if you're fine with 1080p (which it sounds like you are) go with this build, which has a 970 and 1080p monitor - it will save you some money and still give great visuals and performance:

like I said I know very little about what parts can do what. Imagine having a 10 year old computer and it's all you know. Like a homeless guy being asked to partake in a wine tasting event. He would be like me, mmm this one seems good shoot they all seem tasty to me.

Is there anything this would not be able to play on high settings?

I would like to understand why you choose the parts you choose.

i5 over i7 because hyperthreading not necessary in your use case, an newer architecture

16gb(2*8gb) over 32gb(4*8gb) gaming usually doesn't require the use of that much system ram,

mobo is similar, just generational upgrade, nothing to explain

500gb sdd + 2tb HDD over 1tb sdd because you may need more than 1tb for all of your games, you could have main applications and a few games on your ssd and then all the other games and media on a large hdd( personally i would save money and geta 250gb ssd instead.)

970 over 280x because newer, more power efficient, can actually run modern titles on ultra and probably will do for some time.

psu because gold certified, but again i think 550 watt may be enough, check with: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

monitor because it is well reviewed good performing ips, although i think this is the weak point of this build, i would get a 1440p monitor: https://teksyndicate.com/news/2013/08/15/tek-syndicate-1440p-monitor-club

the rest is subjective, i have the arc midi r2, its awesome but i would reposition the fans so you have two at the front and one at the rear.

I feel like building a gaming computer could be a college coarse, it might be, is it? How does one get to know all the terms and what can do what, when it comes to all the newest parts. Like sata, plx, physical nic, all these new terms I'm like i dunno. Trying to make the transition from going to best buy to building my own is a steep mountain to climb. Hopefully one day it will make since. Just a little while back I didn't know what uefi bios was.

I'm on board with the 1440p monitor. I'm sure the 970 graphics card can handle 1440, what I want to know is if I use a 1080p monitor will it lessen the graphics card load and allow games to play any better?

Will connecting any particular connection like DVI or HDMI help or hinder anything?

This build is for educational purposes, I want to see how people recommend to tweak this build. Let's pretend the budget is 10 thousand dollars. All it will be used for is gaming the goal is to make it play any game on ultra settings.
