USB 3.0 uses drivers in order to function properly, it won't work out of the box with the most popular OSs.

Reinstall the USB 3.0 drivers and try again.

i have 8.1 i thought that had native USB 3 support. but i have my mouse plugged in to another USB 3 port and it works fine.

It's still always better to install updated manufacturer drivers then use the drivers that come with Windows

For most Asmedia controller versions W8.1 will support it natively, is it the front or rear port you are trying? And which one works?

would that work because its for windows 7 and not 8.1.  i just dont want to mess any thing up because when i upgrade from 8 to 8.1 it was causing the pc to crash on startup.

Try with the driver, if it doesn't work or crashes, boot into safe mode and uninstall it.
