Hello everyone, i am building my first pc and im looking for a mechanical keyboard, this will be the first mechanical keyboard i will own, i really like corsair keyboards, and i was thinking about the new RGB model, but it is a bit dissapointing to me, no usb passthrough and i dont know if i will use that RGB functionality that much, so i am looking at the "old" K70.

i really like the black and red combination of the k70 and red would probably be the only colour i would be using with the RGB K70 that is why i don't think it's worth it.

i play a lot of MMORPGs so i'm very stuck between keys, the old k70 has choice of blue and reds,

like i said i have never used a mechanical keyboard before, i have watched a lot of videos and tutorials on choices of switches,

as i know myself i could see myself getting annoyed with the sound of the blues, on the other side in the videos i watched i really like that click, im just thinking over time it may annoy me,

and with the reds i am afraid i will make a lot of typo's since i will be typing in these games a lot aswell.

what is your experience? do any of you have a lot of typos coming from rubber dome to mechanical reds?

or did/do you annoy yourself at the sound of the blues over time, or do you keep enjoying that click?

my choice is between the "old" K70 blue or red switches.

any help would be much appreciated.

Peace.

I had an "old k70" mx blue until yesterday when I sold it to get a k95 rgb mx blue. I found the click amazing and never got tired of it. If you think you may not like it try browns.

If I was to choose I would go with the reds, I game more than I type, even then I think there is no need to have the keys specialized for typing.

Currently I am using a G710+ (brown switches), the other option I considered was a K70 with red or brown switches.

Spoiler

Case Bitfenix Ghost, Mobo Asus Maximus VIII Ranger, CPU i7 6700K @4.2 Ghz cooled by Arctic cooling Freezer i30, (barely). GPU Nvidia GTX 970 Gigabyte G1 @1519Mhz core, RAM 16Gb Crucial Ballistix CL16 @2400Mhz. SSD 128GB Sandisk Ultra Plus as my OS drive. HDD's  1TB  Seagate ST31000524AS its OEM, 3TB Seagate Barracuda, 2x 500GB WDC Blue (RAID 0)

If it isn't working absolutely perfectly, according to all your assumptions, it is broken.

Don't get the Blue K70 the LED's WILL fail. There isn't a single one without a dead LED. The red one is good. If you want USB pass-through, check out Gamdias Hermes, Max Keyboards, and Das.

Reds arent really the best, and typos are probably imminent. Browns or blues really do both better; as a hard or fast press will feel almost exactly the same on a linear and tactile board.

I favour reds, blues are way to noisy for me and while browns theoretically sound like a nice middle ground when I actually tried them they felt like there was something broken in them because the mild feedback is reminiscent of a broken bit of plastic catching under the cap lol but that's just my opinion. Reds with O-rings under the caps is my ideal.

I have got a keyboard with Red Switches and yes they arent ideal for typing and I could imagine that its the same thing with MMORPGs (alot of key strokes per second) + you are chatting alot.

One the blue side of things you dont hear them AS much IF you are wearing a headset and listen to music alot etc..
Thats why I would write the Red switches out and suggest the Blue+Browns.

Because you type alot and might not like the sound of the Blues  I suggest you to go for the brown switches.
However in the end its just about which Switch feels better for you so try them out, maybe buy one from amazon and try it out ( you can still send it back ).

I play alot of MMORPGs

Keep in mind that people around you might find it annoying ;) If you don't care for it and the others you live with (in case you're living with other people) then I'd suggest to get the brown switches.

Oh, and go to the Media Markt (noticed you're from Holland) and try it out over there. Normally they've got some G710+ and a Blackwidow laying over there as show models which you can test on.

Do note that the G710+ has O-rings under the key-caps which will give the browns a bit less sound and even a bit different feeling (please correct if wrong).

The non-RGB corsair keyboards have massive problems with LEDs dieing because of the mounting used, you'd be better off with the RGB model.

Whether you should get a mech or not depends on your budget tbh. Using UK prices:

K70 RGB = £139.99

I would say if your budget for the whole build (standard one-monitor, none of this surround/eyefinity rubbish) was less than £1200 you would be better off buying a cheaper membrane board and spending that money on better components.

If you want to test the switch types you can buy tester kits from maxkeyboard or other retailers. I would recommend you do because the kit also comes with o-rings you can try which will alter the feel of the keys.

In terms of the common switch types:

-My favourite is the brown with a double o-ring mod. It actuates just before bottoming out on the o-rings so has a very short travel distance which I like for typing. I have scrawny skeletal hands but I really smash and bottom-out the keys so I find browns with this mod to be best for me.

-Reds are too light and I will accidentally press them. Blacks are bordering on too heavy, I prefer the tactile switches anyway.

-Blues. Lets just say it's good that you live on your own because they are obnoxiously loud. They also seem to need to be pressed directly in the centre or they have a weird 'sticky' travel. you have to release them above the height at which they click in order to repress, I think? TBH I don't care as they are far too loud for no apparent reason.

now you say all this, i will probably go with one of the new Corsair RGB keyboards, too bad they dont have a passthrough, but i will maybe going for Browns then. still on the fence of all this.

but i really love the design of those corsair keyboards,  i really liked them, but since they pulled the passthrough away on the RGB one, cuz i have been waiting on that actually, but without the passthrough thats why i thought about the old one.
