I'm not entirely certain that this thread belongs here, but it's my best guess. If it would make more sense somewhere else, then I apologize. Anyways, I have a question that I've been trying to find the answer to for a long time, and I figured that if no one here has the answer, it probably does not exist. That question is this: How do you set Spotify as your default media player? By this, I mean specifically how do you get a media button on a keyboard to open up Spotify. Play/Pause/Stop/Forward Track/Backward Track all work, because they simply change the track on any open media player. However, on my keyboard there is a Media button that opens up the media player. It used to open up both Spotify AND Windows Media Player. I uninstalled WMP and now when the button is pressed, Spotify opens as usual, but it seems that the button attempts to run 'shell32.dll' and opens a dialogue box because it does not know what application to open the dll with. Anyways, long story short, I want that button to open Spotify and ONLY Spotify. Thanks to anyone who can help with my predicament.

You can't to my knowledge.

What you could do instead is attempt to force every audio media file to open with Spotify (right click any MP3 or similar audio file and select Spotify as the default program) or just pin Spotify to your taskbar (assuming you're using Windows 7 or later).

In windows 8.1 and probably 7: Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Set Default Programs (or simply search "default programs" and click set default programs) Find the program on the list, select it and then click set default.

ALSO, in windows 8.1 there is another way: Settings Charm > Change PC Settings > Search and Apps > Defaults and then click on the music tab, select your music player (again you can also use search to get to this faster).

I suggest you also do this with the deafult photo viewer and video player to make sure you are using good apps if you are running windows 8.1

That was the 1st thing I tried. Spotify isn't in that list of selectable programs. Is there a way to manually add programs to that list?

I explicitly said that I am talking about a button that opens up the defaoult media program. I'm not talking about opening files with Spotify. It is in my taskbar, and I always have it running. I just like the convenience of having a button specifically for having Spotify pop up, and I figured that it was simple to do, and I was just forgetting something simple and stupid.

Yeah I know, it was just the other things you could do with Spotify.

Do you have a programmable keypad (like a Razer Nostromo for example) or a gaming mouse? What keyboard do you have? You can bind the application to reprogammable buttons

I was actually assuming that this would be a simple fix and that I was just forgetting something minor. But to answer your question, I have an old Logitech Corded Keyboard that uses a ps/2 port - I just use it for the novelty of ps/2. Anyways, I don't have anything like a programmable keypad. I just wanted to get that media button to work. But I guess there's probably no way to do that with my current configuration. But thanks for the help anyways!
