Laptop Crash

Hi Guys, my friend has been having a problem with her laptop, it will just randomly crash and the whole laptop is unusable and the only way to shut it down is to either hold the power button down or take out the battery, this is normally 3 times a day and we have no idea whats causing it, do you guys have any idea what it is.

There are so many possibilities. HDD could be faulty, RAM could not work right.. Maybe you can start by telling us the specs (Hardware and software)
