Hey guys, I'm in the market for a surround set up 5.1/7.1, are there any good ones out there for around $500?

Wanna hang out with me and people like @Theslsamg, @ Ssoele, @BENTHEREN, @Lanoi, @Whiskers, @_ASSASSIN_, @Looney, @WunderWuffle, and @nsyedhasan. Well.... Check out: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/48484-unofficial-linustechtips-teamschnitzel-server-teamspeak/

What equipment do you currently have?

nothing. Basically buying from scratch.  I might either buy a bundle, or select speakers here and there from different brands.

Are you fine with buying used? You'll get much better stuff for the money.

And avoid bundles and HT in a box type things.

I'd go with this, really good for the money, though if you have a large living room.

If you can expand your budget or buy used, I'd get something cheaper for surrounds (used) or try to find something better for FL/FR/C, especially if you plan on listening to any music.

you're going to want to tinker around with fade control a bit.

If you can find a good used receiver that should free up a lot of pesos in your budget.

Yes, free audio gear is usually the way to go on a tight budget, and if you've a small room in the first place there's no reason to go surround.

Hey guys, I'm in the market for a surround set up 5.1/7.1, are there any good ones out there for around $500?

Maybe as set like this...

AV Receiver

http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-VSX-522-K-5-Channel-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B007L8Q75G

Subwoofer

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DUHW6UW

Front & Surround Speakers (2 Pairs of these)

http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B00E7H8GG2

Center Speaker

http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-C-Channel-Speaker-Tweeter/dp/B00HHFBEK6

The above speakers have a low impedance rating, but most receivers should be fine driving them as long as you cross them high and don't crank things up to 11.

A budget (or used) receiver and the speakers below wouldn't be bad either:

are you comparing them to headphones? because 4/6/8 ohm speakers are normal for home use.

Will work for electronic components and parts

I am not comparing them to headphones. Entry level AV receivers do not have a stiff power supply; all the channels also share the same rail in most mainstream designs.

The rail voltage can sag significantly / collapse when driving low impedance speakers at high power levels due to the unsustainable current demand. This causes intermodulation distortion, thereby hurting dynamics and fidelity.

This is an example of how an entry level AVR measures with an 8 ohm load:

http://www.soundandvision.com/content/yamaha-rx-v475-av-receiver-ht-labs-measures

Notice how the per channel output dwindled with 5 channels simultaneously playing? This is because of the common rail collapsing. This gets much worse with a 4 ohm load, as the current demand is doubled.

Mainstream makers had been cheaping out not only on the power supply, but also on thermal design. Many AV receivers these days are designed with marginal thermal dissipation; just enough to sustain rated power with a 6 to 8 ohm resistive load. If you look at entry level AVRs, you'd notice that most of them do not have 4 ohm load ratings (you'd only start to see this rating once you get to the midgrade units). If a more difficult load is introduced, high amplitudes can result to thermal damage. Fortunately, majority of them come with thermal protection circuitry that can either shutdown the device or ramp down output before permanent damage sets in.

This is a high end AV receiver with an independent SMPS per channel. Notice how the per channel output remained essentially the same, even with 7 channels driven:

http://www.soundandvision.com/content/pioneer-elite-sc-09tx-av-receiver-measurements

Also notice the near doubling of power output with a  4 ohm load vs. an 8 ohm load; that is a sign that the amplifier has sufficient current capacity.

I liked your post for a reason. I only think that a stronger sub would be better for dynamics.

I don't get notifications for likes, but I mostly just thought it was funny how similar the posts were. Would been helpful to note those changes however.

Would large floor-tower speakers be useful, instead of using bookshelf speakers?

No offense taken man.

The LFE channel summed with redirected bass from the speaker channels can tax the subwoofer quite a bit at elevated playback levels. I just thought that the greater amplitude capability of either of these might work better:

If you have the space and budget, sure. Would keep you from having to buy stands where needed.

Ultimately, with your budget I think it's more about getting something decent across the board instead of worrying about getting one or two good items and filling the gaps with sub par products. Then, all you have to worry about is setting up the room to sound its best.

I didn't think any of the suggestions through beyond their generally good reviews as I'm not super knowledgeable on speaker specifics. Just wanted to point the OP/thread in the right direction.

That depends on which one you're talking about. How far away would you be sitting from the speakers?

A multi-driver array floorstander can sound bad from up close due to comb-filtering.

At this price point, bookshelf speakers are likely to work better in my opinion.

Yea the room right now, is basically a rectangle with the tv in the front. So what I'm thinking is to arrange the speakers in the front and back, with the seating in the middle.

Do you have places to put the rear bookshelf speakers without having to buy stands? A pair of stands easily adds another 40-50 bucks so that's another thing to factor in. Unless you wanna figure out wall mounting....
