Need help choosing a CPU.

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

3570k is more than enough. You don't need a 3770k for programming or gaming...

The 750w is overkill. A 600w is more than adequate for the 780.

EDIT: What's your budget? You're planning a new build, correct?

Hey guys i know this is a bit of a noob question but should i get an i7-3770 or an i5-3570k for gaming and programming. ps here is the list of parts i'm planing to get evga geforce gtx 780| creative labs sound blaster z| kingston hyper x red 8gb| MSI z77a-g45 motherboard| corsair h100i| nzxt phantom 410 crafted mid tower| case ocz-zt 750w psu|

3770K. Or 8320 instead.

If youre having the power of a 780 you may aswell have a powerful CPU.. if you can afford it also downgrade to a h80i or even a h60i and get the unlocked i7. You may aswell wait for haswell to come out, its only a few days away.. even if you dont get one the prices for ivy bridge are sure to drop.

So by the looks of things the best bet is to go with 3770 and the h70 or h80 thanks all for the great input :)

Don't go with the h70 or h80. The NH-D14 is better than them and it's an air cooler. If that's the level of cooling you're going for, go with the NH-D14.

Otherwise, get the h100i.

That's not silly. Consistent colors is important.

Quick question for anyone still here. Have any of you used Tiger Direct i'm a first time builder and buyer are they reliable or are they just bad?

Let's just say you shouldn't expect any rebates coming back from TigerDirect.

If you're main priority is gaming then go with the i5 3570K or FX 8320 as they both work wonders. Since games don't make use of Hyper-Threading, it's a waste of money to go with the 3770/K. If you will utilize the extra threads (rendering, video editing, CAD, etc) of the 3770/K, it may be worth going with it.

I'd recommend dropping the H100i and go for an air cooler for less and can perform better. Just like someone else suggested, the Noctua NH-D14 is a fantastic cooler for the price, though you said you don't like the colours. Another recommendation would be the Phanteks PH-TC14PE for about $80 - it performs similar to the Noctua NH-D14 but comes in a better variety of colours.

Since Haswell is just around the corner, it's probably a good idea to wait. The performance increase will only be around 5%-10%, but you'll have the option to upgrade in the future.

CryEngine utilizes threads properly.
