Hi,

So I just built my first PC and had it working perfectly, until I realised I'd plugged my CPU fan into a CHA fan port. So to fix it I turned off the computer then unplugged it from the wall, after fixing the fan cable (which took approx. 30 seconds) I went to plug my PC back into the wall when the thing exploded; sparks flew and I could smell something that smelled like gunpowder, the safety switch on my house's power board was also triggered.

The computer will no longer switch on (unsurprisingly) and the Power Supply (an fsp hexa 500W) has got some white goo oozing out of the capacitors and other assorted components. I've checked out the motherboard and GPU and they both seem to be fine, visually at least.

My questions are: what have I done wrong to blow this thing up? Should I buy a replacement PSU and replace it myself or should I take it to a PC repair place? And what should I do/avoid so that this never happens again?

First of all get rid of the PSU, your PSU may have had a switch on the back for the different voltages 240 and the other one i forget.... if you are lucky the rest of your pc hasnt been friend in the process of your psu blowing up but don't cross your fingers

Are you 100% sure the CPU cable is plugged in right? Also have you put your mobo on standoffs in the case? This could cause the short circuit.

Als as @Deletive said, never, ever buy a cheap PSU. Take you entire computer and to go the store with it and tell them the story, they could probably give you a new one or your money back.

I have a bitfenix comrade which has inbuilt standoffs. Thanks for the advice I'll take my computer to the store, have it checked out and get a better quality power supply.

Yeah from looking into the brand it seems dodgy to say the least. It wasn't recommended to me I just figured a power supply was a power supply, boy was I wrong.

Hey you learn from mistakes! We all blew something up at one point!

FSP Group makes good power supplies, that's just a really old and really cheap model.

It was released late 2011, around the same time as the old model of the CX 430 which was non 80+, and yet for some reason people don't judge Corsair as a brand based on their lowest end power supply from nearly 3 years ago.

It didn't seem to be, it might have been though I didn't really check

JonnyGuru did a review of that and warned not to get the unit if it's dented in any way since the bottom of the PCB inside is not insulated... It's basically mounted like a motherboard...

I'm using a 600W version of the same PSU so I'm also a bit worried but so far so good for me...
