Ultra Wide Monitor stutters when overclocked

SeanBond

I bought the lg29um65 a few days ago and did some testing with the refresh rate. This panel can run at 74hz without artifacting however when trying to use anything other than 60hz I get very noticable stutter while playing games. I would like to ask is this normal when overlcocking monitors? My previous monitor was a asus vx238 (which I am selling now) and when clocked up to 71hz it ran games perfectly smooth like 60 just a little bit smoother.

So a few hours ago I decided I didn't need the extra size of the 29um and went with the 25um65. It's the same panel. Same problem with the overclocking on it. Is there anything that could be done about it? Even on lower refresh rates like 68hz it still happens.

This actually sounds like a pixel OD setting problem, which can be adjusted on most, if not, all LG monitors.

Solution: Don't overclock monitors. If they were designed to go higher, they'd come clocked at it.

Don't overclock your cpu then. If it was designed to run at 4.4ghz it would come clocked at that.

I have no idea what that means but I would like to know.

When you OC a panel you can have it successfully work, however still drop frames. I'd just leave it at 60hz or try 65hz or something lower than your 74hz.

Some better than others.

It's hard to tell what makes it possible/impossible ,...high end displays often have strict electronics that prevent overclocking while cheaper displays often let you do it without too much trouble

(but some of them let you do it while skipping frames, resulting in a terrible experience).

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Monitor != CPU. Vastly different technology.

I've done it a few times, and don't really think it's worth it UNLESS you have a good result.

65hz over 60hz isn't gunna do F all.

75hz (without skipping or dropped frames) is pretty nice, and I'd use it, knowing full well it could have issues anytime.

If your gpu is pushing 75fps constant, maybe worthwhile, but if you got the money for that GPU power, a new higher HZ monitor would be best probably.

I have plenty of gpu power, 780ti clocked a 1240mhz. I can't tell where the stutter is coming from, gpu load never hits 99 and the monitor is not seem to be noticeably stuttering. It just seems the game is more choppy. Almost like vsync is not working properly on the monitor. My fps seems to go up to 75 and down to 73.

GPU never hits 99%-100%..Sounds like an issue there...

All games?  Only with Vsync on?

Is it a possibiliity that I could be the fact I am using DVI to HDMI. The monitor only came with an hdmi cable. So at the resolution of 2560x1080p would it be possible hdmi is struggling to keep up?

I am serious. That monitor is a piece of shit; of course it is not working!

No. No its really not. Its working just fine and its beautiful. I wont die if i cant get an extra 14fps. Its an overclock and just like any overclock it's subject to not work. It's not like there is lots of options for ultrawide. Most of the ones that exist cost a fortune anyway.

Really I do love the look of games in at 21:9. Is the anything in particular wrong with the panel that you know of besides me complaining about not being able to overclock it without stutter?

Other than personal preference, there aren't any issues specific to the LCD that I know of. However, like nearly all LCDs, it is locked to 60Hz, has bad motion blur, and has high input lag. If you can handle an 8:5 monitor, can afford one, and have the space a 106LB CRT, I'd recommend a FW900. It's a 24" CRT that can do up to 240Hz (at 800x500) and up to 2560x1600 (at 75Hz).

I don't think I want a 92 pound monitor, I don't actually think I have seen an lcd monitor that has a locked refresh rate. Tv's yes...no noticeable input lag here to my surprise. I figured ips would have some noticeable lag moving from tn.  No noticable motion blur either. However I would love to see something as interesting as 240hz gameplay played before my eyes. Even if it is at a awful resolution. You must be quite the monitor/refresh rate enthusiast.

Can't say I can think of the last time I used a CRT. You very well could be right but I can't even think of where to find a CRT. Maybe I can borrow it from a coworkers dead computer lol.
