Hey guys

I am before uni, and I am about to build a new PC for the Uni years

I was planned it with i7 and Z97 platform, but something got me thinking

How futureproof is the X99 platform?

I would get a 5820K, and it seems overpowered as now, but it should be sufficient for the oncoming years.

Basically I am asking people with previous X platforms, that how is it to live with the high end intels for years and years

you can't futureproof anything.... EVER
now x99 is just dumb, almost no one requires it other than people who do a hell of allot of editing and ddr4 isn't going mainstream for a long time so just stick with z97 unless you want to be an even poorer starving uni student

Specs

CPU: i5 4670k i won the silicon lottery Cooler: Corsair H100i w/ 2x Corsair SP120 quiet editions Mobo: ASUS Z97 SABERTOOTH MARK 1 Ram: Corsair Platnums 16gb (4x4gb) Storage: Samsun 840 evo 256gb and random hard drives GPU: EVGA acx 2.0 gtx 980 PSU: Corsair RM 850w Case: Fractal Arc Midi R2 windowed

I have X58 it's still running strong can still handle games on ok settings oh and no such thing as future proof

There is a thing as future proofing. If you buy a 5930K instead of a 4690k for games, you're future proofing, so that you don't have to upgrade your cpu in a long time and play games in the future that utilizies 6 cores.

Little bit future proof but not a lot and X99 is a huge waste of money if he is only gaming and doing uni work

Even them it isn't really needed, X79 and C602 are still perfectly good for that.

just to clarify

There is a large possibility that I will do 3d editing so it wont be a text editor pc

The biggest question is at the cpu and how modular it is.

By that, I mean how modular the X99 for future use.

For example it has DDR4 slots, and if I need to buy RAM few years later, i can buy one easily( I am not sure about how the RAM generation change works)

Or I can add multiple later gen gpu later on.

I hope you can see my point now :)

i would wait for broad-well as those chips supposedly give off lot less heat i mean half the heat so i would be interested to see how well the overclock

It is a question of your wallet by the end of the day. If you can spare a couple of extra hundred dollars/euros/pounds  X99 is nice to have. Z97 is as good as it gets at the moment for mainstream. That being said this chipset is very good. Maybe if you're going to do some editing in 3D you should look into a i7 4790K.

I like my X99 platform, and yes it is in editing a lot faster than my i7 4770K was! But I paid for the bleeding edge of technology here.

You could pretty much buy 2 z97 systems for what x99 will cost you.  Go z97 now and in 4-5 years down the road if you need a better system, you can use the money you saved now and buy an x99 with it then.

how is that possible, he mention 5820k, which 50$ more than 4790k, 16gb of DDR4 is 100$ more, a X99 Mobo can range from 100-150$ more than a z97, So 200-300$ more is not enough to build a z97 system..

thats what I wanted to tell, there are only £200 difference between a well equiped Z97 (i7, good ram, 16 GB and a good Mobo) and a X99 (+£40 CPU, +£80 on RAM and +£50 on Mobo) and if that means that I can upgrade it a year later or upgrade it easier, than it would worth it

I have an FX 8320, and planning to WC the i7, so it is not a large concern :D

okay then if you render i would recommend x99 with a 5820k and if you do it for a livong and you do it a lot than 5960x if not then i would go 4790k as it is and awesome cpu

C602J, C602, C604, C606 and C608 are the enterprise chipsets for Socket LGA 2011

Socket LGA 1366 on the enterprise side had the 5500 series chipsets (5500, 5520) though unless I'm not mistaken I think there were some server 1366 boards using the X58 chipset though I can't remember.

so does it worth regarding future upgrading and longevity to get a X99/5820k over a Z97/4790k?

For content creation purposes or 3d edfiting and modeling, yes...for gaming no.

intel will soon enough launch a new architecture with faster cores and the quad-core (i5/i7) itterations of that architecture will be better than haswell-E in regards to gaming for a much smaller cost.

Thank you

This PC will be used mainly for projects, modelling and creating ( for example PCB-s, enclosures, stuff like that), although I was not sure about the longer term differences between the enthusiast and professional components

I seen many people using their i7-920 upgrading their PC-s now after 5 years and that was a good sign for me

i mean for those purpose having the possibility to upgrade to the 8 core 16 threads later on is great and also DDR4 will see much faster memory chips later on as well. If you have the budget for it and are a power user as you've descirbed it i'd say go for it.
